Need Help - Turkish Air Flight 981

Fri Feb 01, 2002 12:53 am

I'm writing a term paper on the Turkish Air Flight 981 crash and the implications it had for Douglas and the flying public. I'm looking for a copy of the official accident report of the incident as well as any books on this incident or the DC-10 and its problems. Any advice would be welcomed. Thanks for your help.

I recall there was an excellent book about the DC10 which focused on this very accident. If memory serves me correctly, it was called "The rise and fall of the DC10" and the author was John Godson (90% sure).

I recommend it thoroughly.

There was also a book written about this specific crash. It was called The Last Nine Minutes: The Story of Flight 981 by Moira Johnston. It's out of print but you can buy it at http://alibris.com for $4.95.

There is also a chapter about this in Air Disaster Vol 1 by Macarthur Job, however I have read the above book The last 9 mins and it is the definitive work on this accident. Good luck with the paper.

In addition to the "the Last Nine Minutes" that someone else mentioned, another excellent book on the THY crash is Destination Disaster. From the Tri-Motor to the DC-10: The Risk of Flying. Not just lots of info on the DC-10 crash, but also the context of the industry at that time, plus the FAA situation, plus internal Douglas stuff, all of which helped set the stage. The one chapter on the Applegate memo is worth the price of the book alone... Lots of diagrams, and easy for layperson to understand...

You wouldn't want to be mistaken in your paper, its Turkish Airlines vs Air.

Thanks for your help. I have the books "the last nine minutes" as well as "destination disaster". I'm curious if anyone knows where I could get a copy of the accident report. Also, any sources on how the public saw the crash or on McDonnell Douglas. This paper has to be around 15 pages, so I need to examine all aspects of the disaster.

Thanks again,
Mike

I checked around for the report (sorry I forgot to mention it), and couldn't find anything.

The BEA (France's NTSB) might have a copy somewhere, so you might try to email them and see what they have...
