Why Is EK Ordering The A380?

Fri Feb 01, 2002 2:31 am

Why do you think EK became the launch customer of the A380?
As far as I know they don't even fly the 744. To me it seems to be a logical step to go from the 744 to the A380.
Some might think that they want an all Airbus fleet and therefore go with the A380 instead of the 744, but they have 777's haven't they? Both 772's and 773's.

Are they going to start a new route that is expecting to have a very high demand or on what routes are the "Big Bus" going to fly?

One of their employees told me they could do with the A380 in service now and not in 2006 because of the very high demand on the LHR-DXB route, despite introducing a BHX-DXB service in 2000 and introducing a 2nd LGW-DXB service this summer and MAN-DXB expected to be getting 777-300s in the summer!

More money than sense.

PR factor.

Low yield LHR-DXB-India/Pak traffic which is ideally suited for the A380.

Maktoum stating that there will be 15 million visitors/annum to Dubai by 2010 and EK will be taking most of them there.

I think for small rich country's such as Singapore, Emirates and the Gulf states, state owned Flag carriers are real FLAG Carriers. They spend a lot in showing the world that they offer quality, grace, power, whatever, to attract business, improve image etc.

Keesje, Emirates is profitable.
But, as a young carrier, they choose to be different, by having very high quality standards.
The reason EK is buying A380 for the future is just that DXB does not have the same oil reserves as the other Emirates.
And they want to use the current profits to prepare the future.
The objective of the government is to transform Dubai in one of the world's favorite touristic destination.
That's why they are building hotels such as the Burj al Arab; that's why they are organizing the Dubai shopping festival, ....
For EK, the only advantage of being State owned is just a good coordination between the government ambition for the visitors and their network annd fleet.

Exactly what I asked about two months ago, its just for prestige they could do with the 747-400 Smile

Rolls Royce are rumoured to be giving up to 90% discount on the new Trent 900 engines which pretty much pays for the cost of the aircraft (over and above the discounts Airbus are also giving to the launch customers) so its an offer too good to pass up in my opinion.

A better question would be...why is Qatar Airways ordering the A380? Qatar has a population of 200,000 people!!!

Qatar Population

2001 - Census

728,000 of which only 140,000 are Qatari Citizens.

--------------------------------------

Qatar Airways has had 2-digit growth everyyear, for 1997/98 they had over 40% growth.

Fleet Today - 13 Aircraft
Fleet 2007 - 19-24 (depending on options) Aircraft

If you think about their growth rates they need much more aircraft than the aircraft they are buying

Dubai is a destination that is unknown to most actually, ive never been there but it does have some sort of prestige to it. Most probably havent been there but it just says power, with world class airport, golf, horse racing and other events.

But O & D seems low really, and connections seem very important to the whole airport. That means it is very important to give positive PR to the rest of the world on Dubai and its tourist proess. They are doing a fine job.

I wouldn't call india flights low yeild.

Compare these prices

DXB-BOM $990 Return (1197mi) Standard Airfare (2 weeks advanced booking)
LHR-JFK $1138 Return (3452mi) Standard Airfare (2 weeks advanced booking)

If you compare the prices you will get

DXB-BOM $0.41 per standard Y seat per mile
LHR-JFK $0.16 per standard Y seat per mile

You can fly Uk to Australia with EK for around £600.00 r/t - (about $840.00US) - fly on brand new 777's, get IFE and telephones in your seats, a chance both ways to stop in Dubai and do some serious shopping and tanning. Or I can fly QF for more $ with less to amuse me for 24 hours.....take yer pick. Bring on the 380's!!

"Exactly what I asked about two months ago, its just for prestige they could do with the 747-400." There's not a lot of difference between the two actually, the A380 only carries 15% more pax, but it's operating costs are lower and it's new technology at the beginning of it's life, whereas the 744 is kind of old and isn't going to be in production, constantly updated, in 20 years. And for those who think Emirates adding A380s represents some kind of huge leap in capacity, remember the 777-300 is like a 747 Classic, so the gap isn't so big after all. They're also getting some A340-500s and/or -600s which are also in the 747 Classic ballpark.

And Emirates don't need to buy aircraft for prestige, they're already the best airline in the world.
