LH A340 Or UL B767 - Creature Comforts

Fri Feb 01, 2002 12:13 pm

If you were doing a trans-oceanic flight, would you choose a B767 or an A340? I flew on a DL 763 last year, and was not very happy with it; will I notice much improvement on a LH A340?

I'm not really concerned with statistics or "A vs. B"; what I am concerned with is passenger comfort in Y Class for 10 hours.

Wow! Nobody has any experience with a A340 or a B767 on a trans-oceanic flight they care to share  Confused

flew on KLM and DL 767 to ATL. liked KLM better. They have overhead tv's all over the cabin. DL had old seats and hardly visible projector screen in the front.

Seats are 7 abreast in economy which makes them relatively wide. 6 Abreast (mostly) in business class which makes them relatively narrow.

I think more then 50% of all transatlantic flights are with 767's hese days. AZ, BA, CO, DL, KL, AF, AA, UA, AC, US all use them on the Atlantic.

Never flown a A340.

cheers,

Both aircraft are good but I'd prefer UA B763 as they have PTVs in Economy...

I´d prefer an Asian carrier over a European carrier over a Canadian carrier over a US carrier any time. It doesn´t really make a difference whether it´s a 767 or a 340 - LH 340s have 2-4-2, UA 767s have 2-3-2 - so the worst you can get is one seat away from the aisle.

I've been on LH A340's four times so far (MUC-EWR, EWR-MUC, FRA-DFW, DFW-FRA).

Compared to three Delta 767ER Atlantic crossings, A340 is relatively more confortable (smoother ride, very quiet..). I could say I had some luck on my FRA-DFW trip.. the plane was ~40% full.. = coasy relaxation over 4 seats  Smile

I have experience on both. The 767 economy seats give about an inch more width than the A340, but the overall cabin width is less and this may get to you after 10 hours! The thing I loved about the A340 was the low cabin noise, it's amazing. Although I like the 767, I have always noticed a residual rumbling or vibration even at cruise.

If you are in business class, the A340 six abreast will be better than the equivalent in the 767.

For the LH340s, try and get a seat as far forward in the Y cabin as you can. Back in May, I was seated in the last row of an a340 BOS-FRA. LH has their a340s equipped with a galley in the very tail of the plane. If you think about it, the tail is a giant cone, so all the noise that went on back there was funnelled up right to me to hear, from the banging of the carts for meal prep, to their talking back there for the entire flight. Needless to say, I had to take quite liberal advantage of the wine service to close my eyes for a while on that flight. At the other end of the spectrum, if you are riding C, its nice. I did that on an operational upgrade on a different trip FRA-BOS. Quite comfortable seat (with the exception that you cant have the legrest up and the traytable out at the same time, as there isnt enough room there for your legs), but their IFE is a little dated, but still IFE is better than having no IFE at all. The food service is wonderful, and they had a nice selection of wines. The 2-2-2 up there is bliss....

How can the cabin width of a 767 get to you after a while? its still a widebody and in my opinion is one of the most comfortable planes to travel on. How can you go wrong with 2 seats one by a window the other open aisle, then 3 seats 2 of them in an open aisle then 2 more? There is no cramming anyone in a 767 and its still a very wide aircraft. Maybe you would rather fly a 777 and have 2 people on each side of you sitting in the middle of the aicraft 5 abreast?!?!?!?no thanks. anyway thats just my opinion. I have flown on Delta and TWA 767's both very comfortable aircraft and very roomy

I've flown all T/A types including the LH340. The 767 is probably the most boring looking plane on Earth (except the new 764 which is a beauty). But since you aren't flying for looks and aren't an LD2 container, take your pick. As a passenger travelling in Y class, nothing can beat the comfort of a new 763 or 764. For seat width and amenities, take the CO764 if you can. I haven't yet flown this specific type, but with an extra inch (by now we all know how critical this is) and PTVs it's the clear choice. By contrast, and old crappy ass DL 763 as described above would lose out to the LH340 every day. In addition, if you can swing B-Class somehow, the CO764 still wins out with 5 across vs. the standard 6. Be that front row middle seat and you'll feel like king of the world.

My plan is to travel AUS - STR. When I bought the tickets, this was my plan:

AUS-IAD UL 735
IAD-FRA LH 744
FRA-STR DB ICE

STR-DUS LH 735
DUD-ORD UL 763 (this flight got canceled)
ORD-AUS UL 735

Now my schedule can be
STR-DUS LH 735
DUS-IAD UL 763
IAD-AUS UL 735

or

STR-MUC LH A321
MUC-ORD LH A340
ORD-AUS UL 735

When I used to fly across the Atlantic, the Boeing 747 was the only plane that flew across the pond. My only non-747 trans-oceanic flight was on a DL 763 last year, which was very dismal.

Speaking just about the aircraft, I've flown on a wide variety of planes from the two big manufacturers and I must say that the A340 is the most beautiful aircraft I've ever been on. Pax comfort level is exemplary and I really cannot say enough good things about those big Buses.
Whenever I travel, the A340 is my preferred choice.

It should be noted that cabin comforts such as PTV's, seat types, seat pitch, and even to some exten width, are choosen by the airlines. Overall, the cabin depends mostly on the airline. Of course, the plane does matter, but its not the deciding factor.

i flew KLM 767-300ER, and LH A340. its really hard to say because i felt comfortable on both, plus that the flight i was on FRA-DXB was almost empty on economy so i took a window seat and the seat beside it. i really dont know .. in addition that the LH A340 , like all airbus have tv's hanging up in the ceiling that will retract before take off and before landing. so i guess they are fine

Are you aware you´re on a TRAIN on your first FRA-STR leg? Sure, it´s a very convenient connexion time-wise, but as an aviation nut I´d prefer waiting longer for a real flight.

Comfort is really up to the airline. I flew an Air France A340 less than a month ago, and it was quite comfortable; up there with CO's 777. However, one bad thing about the A340 is that if you have a window seat, the wall seems to curve in on you too much.

Whatever you do, don't base your decision solely on PTV's. IMO, they are nice, but way overrated. When I flew IAH-CDG on CO, I barely used mine. The only bonus was that I could choose between several movies. Same on the return on Air France, I barely used the PTV.

My Advice: Take Continental/Air France through IAH. AUS-IAH-CDG-SRT.

I agree with the other guys who said it really depends on the airline. For example a charter airline can take a nice 767 or A340 and cram so many seats in that it is horrible. I have been on a LH A340 and a DL 763. I liked the A340 better. Plus, the service on LH was way above the service that Delta provided. I have found that service is almost always better on a European carrier than on an American carrier. I'm American so I hate to say that but it's the truth. Enjoy your trip on whomever you decide to fly with.
