American Airports: Future Trends?

Fri Feb 01, 2002 4:20 pm

Wha trends do people see in developing American airports, and the Hub and spoke operations?

I ask this as I see domestic hubs for the majors, such as St Louis for AA, becoming unnecessary with their current International focus. This will mean a total redesign of airports, and airlines use of them.

New airlines will probally find it hard to compete now, as described in a previous tread, the majors and current airlines have alreay created their own markets. How will the airports go at handling the future growth, and will this be an important element in the sustainable future of aviation in the USA?

If/when traffic resumes its pre-9/11 rates of growth, I could easily see the reimpostion of slot controls at airports like LGA, DCA, JFK, BOS, etc happening.

It was a complete free-for-all back in the summer of 2000 when the FAA did away with the slots at LGA and the airport (already the most congested in the country) was bombarded with regional jets because nobody wanted to cede the competitive edge, never mind that almost every flight was delayed 2-3 hours.

The gentleman's agreement among the airlines that saw a slot "lottery" take place was only a stopgap measure IMHO. Since new airports aren't being built and more people are flying, the only answer is to restrict the movement of smaller regional jets during peak hours. This can be done via a revised landing fee schedule during peak hours that penalizes an airline for using RJ's instead of a 757 for example.
