Strange looking A320(?) with bulge at AMS

Fri Jul 22, 2016 2:45 pm

All,

I just saw what I believe to be an A320 at AMS. Unfortunately I wasn't quick enough to snap a picture, but it appeared to have a bulge on the starboard side roughly above the front door.

Does anybody have any idea what this may have been? Maybe any keen AMS spotters that are around?

As I said believe it was a A320, however it appeared to be missing the wing fences. It didn't look like a recognisable airline.

That won't be an A320 going off what you have said.

What colours was it and what time/day/arriving/departing/colour was it??

It was white and red, and it was taxiing around AMS around 4PM CET today (22/07/2016). Impossible to tell if it was arriving or departing I'm afraid.

It was definitely an A320 size, the engines and tail looked like an A320, no wing fences. No 737 either however as it didn't haven't the classic 737 kink in the VTP.

Was thinking maybe one of the older 320s that didn't haven't wing fences, and which may have been converted for some sort of science purpose?

Sounds to me like the Honeywell 757 engine testbed. It has a third engine pylon above/adjacent to door 1R as well as a red and white livery. I believe it was in Farnborough last week too, so it was/is in Europe.

Honeywell test airframe and its a 757-200 series. Always gets a lot of odd looks.

The Honeywell 757 is indeed at AMS now. I read they're using it to demonstrate their avionics to potential customers.

Googling the Honeywell test bed I came across the Boeing 757 test bed, this one makes the Honeywell bird look almost normal. :o

That particular 757 is a very frequent visitor in AMS lately and flying regularly to/from GVA

Why are they here? Didn't know Honeywell had a present in The Netherlands.

The 757 can be seen parked at Boeing Field in Seattle. It's at the Military Flight Center. It's the one parked perpendicular to the rest of the aircraft. I haven't seen it move in several years.

Calling the 757 an A320 is quite the insult ...sounds like swearing in church :)

To defend the poster a bit, on one way or another due to the bulges or perhaps the colours it looks shorter than an ordinary 757, optical illusion no doubt. I have seen the thing a few times approaching low over Amsterdam center this week.
