ATA Split Personality

Hey Folks,
What exactly is ATA's customer base? I thought they were a charter airline but it seems they're trying to segue into the business market. I know they've put some dollars into new 738s (with those beautiful winglets) and 753s. They serve Boston and I'd try them (I fly to Chicago often) but they don't have a miles program as far as I can tell.
Anyone have info/comments?

ATA for many years earned their keep as a charter carrier. Flying military charters as well as for major travel agencies (Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays). A few years ago they decided to make a go at operating scheduled passenger service with their fleet of 727's/757's/L1011's.

IND and MDW were primary bases with flights to Florida and the west coast. There was really no hub and spoke type operation to their network.

Chicago Express has operated as their commuter operation for some time.

As far as a mileage program, I think they have a program, or at least I read about a segment based reward program for frequent flyers that they were trying to implement.

Currently ATA flies into LGA, BOS, LAX, DFW, MDW, IND, MCO, I think RSW with scheduled service. I'm sure I'm leaving out a few cities, including some Mexican and Carribean destinations.

ATA does have a split personality at the moment. When they first began regularly scheduled flights they tried to attract vacationers. With the acquisition of there new Boeing 737-800's and 757-300's came a new livery. The new livery is a bit toned down from the old "fun in the sun livery". They are now trying to attract more business travelers but are definitly not straying away from the vacationers. As far as I know I believe that they do not have a frequent flier program.
Their website doesn't seem to indicate that anything of that sort exists.

ATA was set to go mostly scheduled service and keep only its "major" charter flying ( Military, PHH , Travel City). After 9/11 hit ATA decided to pickup additonal flying to help offset the decline in Business that hit the Industry. One of the assests of ATA is it's ability to become whatever type of airline it needs to be.The great employees of ATA can work Military , charter, scheduled service all with equal ability and efficiency.

ATA picked up funjet contracts that kept 10 727's in service through the spring and also just picked up another one that dedicates 4 737-800s for charter work.

With the ever shrinking charter market I thinkl it's ATA's objective to get back to mostly scheduled service.

ATA has a program similar to Southwest's. If you fly a certain amount of segments with them within a certain amount of time you get a free ticket. I think it's six one ways (3 r/t)

Yeah I think ATA is sliding down a slippery slope withour a core customer base. Is it low-fare business travelers on major American routes or is it holiday charter passengers to Mexico and Hawaii??

These two passenger bases require very different services and structures, I'm surprised ATA has such a tremendous transformation going on.

I'm surprised the business ATA does. Chicago Express out of Dayton has consistently high loads. Following 9/11 I heard from some of their employees that they needed a certain load factor per Saab 340 to keep their heads above water, and they have kept really high loads. I guess they're doing something right.

ATA does indeed have program similar to Southwests.It is buy 3 roundtrips and receive one free round trip.

The flights must be booked via www.ata.com to qualify.

Hawaii is actually a part of ATA's scheduled service. I believe they coordinate their planning with Pleasant Hawaiian but ATA also sells seats directly on the flights, and Pleasant Hawaiian also books passengers on Hawaiian, Delta, American, and United.
