Qantas's First 737-800 Has Arrived In Australia

Sun Feb 03, 2002 9:49 am

Hi all,

The first Qantas 737-800 has just arrived in Australia. The aircraft departed the USA on Thursday and is currently in Brisbane.

I understand that the aircraft will enter immediate service and be also used for crew training

just curious - is it a common endorsement for the pilots of 733 and 734?

Any truth to the rumour that one of the -800's is coming in a Nalanji/Wunula livery?

It would be interesting to see a 738 in either wunala or nalanji colours

Well i wonder if i'd recognise the Qantas B738 as the DJ's B738s! Each day walking to school or during lessons get to see heeps of planes flying across our school.

Is it true that the plane is quieter installing the winglets? (From a advertisment i read in Flight International about the B737/8s)

Best Regards

Posts on aus.aviation report that QF has reverted to naming their a/c after Australian cities/towns/regions which has pleased many people.

VH - VXA named Broome.
VH - VXB stated to be in an Aboriginal colour scheme

And the other names will be:
- VXC Gippsland
- VXD Tenterfield
- VXE Coffs Harbour
- VXF Sunshine Coast
- VXG Port Douglas
- VXH Warrnambool
- VXI Oodnadatta
- VXJ Coober Pedy
- VXK Katherine
- VXL Charleville
- VXM Mount Hotham
- VXN Fremantle
- VXO Kakadu.

cheers

I can't tell if the winglets make the 738 quieter than without as I have not seen a 738 without winglets for a while.

I'm booked on QF644 from Melbourne to Cairns on 23Mar, and the equipment is down as '73H'. Also looks like one leg of the return flight on QF639 on the 26th (via Brisbane) is also 73H.

Can anyone confirm yet which routes the 738s will fly on? I think I may have read at some point that they will be single class configuration. Is that right?

Is the 73H the same as a 738? Is 73H the model after the 73G? Is 73H only a Qantas series designator, or is it used at other airlines. Think AA uses 738.

Cheers!

Can't remember the exact details, but 73G and 73H have winglets, whereas the straight numerics (738, etc) don't.

Why on earth the winglets deserve a different aircraft type designation is beyond me.

I saw VH-VXA land on Runway 34L as QFA501 from Brisbane yesterday as I taxied out. Funilly enough taxying for departure at the same time from 34R was a winglet equipped BBJ.
Very impressive looking 'plane, even in the rain. The winglets are very eyecatching I must say.
I look forward to getting a closer look.

So how did they get it there, did they install extra fuel tanks or did they just ferry it the other way around the world?

Cool! It's just like Virgin Blue's plane and Polynesian and ATA. They all have winglets on their 737-800's

B737-700's are 73G's, since the 737 is for 'Boeing 737 All Series'.

I expect that 73H is a special QF designator.

The "spirit of Australia" titles look out of place & the winglets should have kangaroos on them!

About "The Spirit Of Australia" Titles....

Wed Feb 06, 2002 2:39 pm

On the picture of what the QF A380 will look like, the "Spririt Of Australia" titles are the same as on this 738. FINALLY A LIVERY CHANGE albeit a very small one.
Fighting for the glory of the Australian Republic.

Virgin Blue was doing ferry flights that went, Seattle, Maui, Nadi-Fiji, to Brisbane and this is easily achievable according to the boeing website.
