Who Flies On The Cargo Planes W/ The Cargo?

Sun Feb 03, 2002 12:56 pm

Well, besides the pilots, who else, if anybody, is on board...for instance, a FedEx DC10?

At my last job as an A&P, I used to jumpseat on cargo DC-8's all the time (with the occasional 727 thrown in for good measure).

Funny story...

We once had a box of laboratory rats break open and the rats were loose in the aircraft. Rats are known to gnaw through wiring and things so the plane had to be taken out of service until all were caught. They couldn't all be accounted for so we had to call in an exterminator to leave poison baits smeared with peanut butter in hopes of catching the ones that were loose. We all figured that they were long gone, since a cargo plane is not the most hospitable place for rats and sure enough, the missing rodents were never caught.

They're probably sunning themselves on a tropical beach right now...

Before Sep 11, FDX employees were able to jumpseat, even for personal reasons.
Today, it is just a nice souvenir...
