CO - European Expansion

Tue Feb 05, 2002 7:53 am

Prior to 9/11, it was reported that CO was planning for a major expansion to European destinations out of both its EWR and IAH hubs, many potentional cities were mentioned; out of EWR, service to Athens, one of more Scandanavian capital cities, additional destinations in Germany, etc. were mentioned; out of IAH, there was talk of service to AMS, MAD and FRA on a nonstop basis.

Now that things are at least beginning to get back to normal, and CO seems to be doing better than most during this difficult period, any news?

1) CO will begin flying IAH to AMS shortly, any plans for the other cities mentioned out of IAH?

2) Any new transatlantic destinations out of EWR?

3) What about the suspended services? While CLE-LGW is coming back, will EWR-STN and EWR-DUS be reinstated in the future?

Any insight would be appreciated, esepcially from our CO experts...........thanks!

This is a good topic, I would think that additional service from IAH would come before EWR, most likely FRA, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear of new destinations from EWR, particularily when all the 767's come in and there is an abundance of BF configured 757's that have been replaced by 767's on their European routes.

After the new runway is built at CLE, and the expansion in feed brought about by the additional capacity, I would not be suprised to see a CLE-AMS flight to connect with the KLM hub. Right now, the numbers seem to indicate that Europe is still weak. If any expansion occurs to European cities, it would occur when the economy improves and more people are flying, my guess, in 2003 at the earliest.

Other than the AMS service, I would not expect to see anything more out of IAH until Terminal E is up and running... in other words mid-2004 at the earliest. (term D just doesn't have the room....).

The only new transatlantic route for 2002 will be IAH to AMS, and this flight will initially be flown with a 767-200 and not a 767-400 as had originally been planned, prior to 9/11.

There had been rumors of an expansion in service from IAH to MAD, FCO, and FRA as the most likely destinations and from EWR to either ARN, OSL, or CPH, possibly MUC, EDI, ATH, IST, and CAI. This was all before the downturn in US travel that came before 9/11 and the post 9/11 environment.

My guess is that a few EWR to Europe routes sadly may not survive, unless the economy improves. I am not sure what those routes would be.....

In either case, look for little or no further expansion to Europe for Continental any time soon. May in 2003 or '04 when the industry is expected to have a meaningful rebound.

Even before 9/11, IAH wasn't expected to see any new international flights until Terminal E is completed. D is filled to the brim, and it's only about 10 years old too. In 2004, when E is finished and the economy is back on its feet, expect co to start service to FRA, MAD, FCO, and the like from IAH. MAD would be a good money maker with all of CO's Latin American connections.

I don't think IAH-MAD would work very well. It would offer good connections to Central America, but Iberia is long established offering the same ones on thier own aircraft. IAH-FRA would be a good one, though.

It's not a new route but EWR-DUB and EWR-SNN will again be two seperate flights this Summer, and this time they're both going to be flown with 767-400s.

As for IAH-MAD, CAL has better options to Mexico and Central America than Iberia and CAL now coeshares with Air Europa of Spain and Portugal.
