Virgin Suspends CPT Flight

Wed Feb 06, 2002 10:54 pm

Effective 20 March one of their Cape Town flights
and effective 20 April the second flight.
This is for the southern hemisphere winter and
resume in October again

Another one bites the dust in South Africa!
Cheers!

Isn't the Virgin CPT flight 7x week? Do you mean that the service will be reduced to 5x weekly, or the route will be suspended altogether?

Bet it has something to do with the weak rand.....air fares to Europe from South Africa are an absolute bargain at the moment.

Apologies, I was under the mistaken impression that they flew a daily service-it is apparently only twice-weekly.

This is a shame, as they provide a better service than BA or SAA!

Donder, I flew VS last month, and our daylight flight to London left CPT at 1145am-hardly early morning!

We arrived in London at 945pm, perfect!

Sounds like a weird decision. From what I've heard post-September, South Africa was for a while rumoured to be the best replacement destination for some of the lost transatlantic traffic. So several airlines allegedly upped their capacity on those routes.

Does anyone know what routes the planes will be used on instead?

Virgin upped capacity to JNB by replacing the A340 with the B744.

A codeshare agreement has been entered into with Nationwide to provide onward connections from Jo'burg to Cape Town and Durban.

The direct flights to Cape Town (hopefully with extra frequencies) will be reinstated later this year.

Donder,

The schedule has changed; nevertheless, 9.20am is not early, as far as I am concerned!

In fact, it is the ideal time for many of us who travel regularly between RSA and London to leave. An evening arrival into LHR is perfect!

The yields are better suited to the traditional times though

You might be right on that one, although I haven't got the means to investigate!  Wink/being sarcastic

CPT is notoriously seasonal - massive peaks in the northern winter, and huge troughs in the summer. Load factors shift enormously during the year on CPT. This may account for TK's decision to stop their CPT tag.
