Awesome New AA Commercials

Fri Feb 08, 2002 2:28 am

I almost passed out when I saw and heard these 2 new American Airlines commercials... there is not a single word spoken in them, only the music and words you see on the screen.

As a furloughed AA flight attendant, it really got to me... it made me proud to call AA home.

Here's the link to view them:

http://www.amrcorp.com/flagshiptoday/feb02/commercials.htm

I hope you all enjoy them as much as I did

Yours,

I hope Enya got royalties for 'Storms of Africa'  Wink/being sarcastic

Is it me or, in ENGINES, does the opening shot start with a 727 nose which morphs into an MD-80 tail by the time it has passed!?

Great spots!

Heavymetal: Yes! I saw that too with the opening shot of the plane!

I also can't help thinking that AA used a lot of footage they already had used in previous commercials to make these new ones (note presence of retired planes such as Md-11s and possibly DC-10s).

Overall, however, those are some great ads!

Not to sound cheesily sentimental, but I think that these spots will go down as some of the best airline commercials ever...

Very well done, very creative, and I think they convey a very good message. American really hit the mark with these!

Like I've always noticed. AA has superb marketing folks.

UA should be jealous! This kicks "we are united" right out of the sky.

Sure beats what I saw from an AA 727-200 crew on September the 14th in Cancun...

They were posing with huge smiles under an American flag flying at half mast. Flying at half mast for the loss of their co-workers and countrymen, flying at half mast for the biggest blow their country has ever taken. And here they were having a great time making very wrong gestures and comments below the flag. This happened as I was checking in at the Melia Cancun and has disturbed ever since. Granted, they got an extended stay in Cancun paid by AA and haven't been home since it happened, and maybe they didn't understand the severity of the case. But I was in Spain when it happened and I'm not American, and beleive me what they did was wrong.

One thing that I wonder about, though, is how long these were in the making. Not to diminish from the terrific quality of the commercials, but there's quite a bit of footage of the DC-10 or MD-11 in the Engine spot and one of what I assume to be an American DC-10 taking off in the background in the Way of Life spot.

My guess is that a lot of this commercial was stock footage -- which just adds to the kudos that should be given to their marketing department and ad agency. These were probably put together in a short amount of time.

These ads give me the warm fuzzies! They're simple, but so sophisticated. Another great move by AA.

And what's that great mood music? It's in my head now, got me thinkin of silverbirds...

Most excellent commercials.

Too bad they weren't aired during the Super Bowl, they would've made an even bigger impression!

The music is probably a commercial production library (or custom recorded) imitation of Enya's "Storms of Africa"...it doesn't sound like they remixed the actual song.

Enya is a favorite soundtrack for inspirational advertising. HBO did a really good image piece several years ago using anothe Enya song, I forget the name.

Find 'Storms of Africa' on Enya's 1988 album Watermark

I agree AKelley, these would have been very effective on the Superbowl. Did they run on any of the pre-game stuff I wonder?

I won't download them untill my dad gets home, but just by the pics shown on the site, they definately look good.

American always seems to air really good commercials.

Long live my favorite airline, American.

Anybody seen "The Great American Get-together" commercials? I like those too.

United has aired some pretty good ones also. They had one airing during the strikes with a lot of images of planes throughout their history and it was really touching, even from an AA lover.

They are great,

Great touchy feely brand engineering, without needing to resort to features overall irrelevant to the airline.

If you don't understand what I mean, see a few old Ansett or Qantas commercials.

Well done!

Cheers,

Sigh! I'm still downloading the first one. It's hell being stuck with a 56K dial-up. But after reading the positive feedback, I'm going to let it finish and then get the second.

The person who made the post about the pre ordained failure of AAs JFK expansion might do well to realize that AA has always had an excellent marketing department.

I'm up to 35% now. Cable isn't available where I live and I'm too cheap anyway.

Let you know later.

Okay okay clam down. Its a commercial designed to make you feel like they care so they can get your MONEY. American cares so much (wipe tear)..hey look its the Easter Bunny!

Its no wonder so many suckers lost their money to Enron - even today in 2002 people are still dumb enough to believe politicians and corporations.

I love AA, I'm a pretty loyal customer because they got agood product thats it. If I want to feel good about something I'll volunteer at a soup kitchen, not sit on the couch and have it spoon fed by million-dollar bald men who sip martini's by the pool laughing at the masses who feed on image alone.

Heavymetal:

I watched some of the pre-game show, I didn't see any AA commercials.

I'm not surprised that these AA spots (or any airline commericals, now that I think of it) were not shown during the Super Bowl. Super Bowl advertising is extrememly expensive. Not something for the airlines to be wasting their money on right now.

IN any case, they were great! I'm sure they'll get a lot of buzz when they start airing on tv.

I've harbored much unfounded resentment towards AA since the time of the Reno Air take over. TWA's buy out didn't put them in a better light -- but this does.

While at times there are overly maudlin spots and the end was a little to symbolic of the flag waving pomp seen across this country in mid-September but this add got its point across very well. Props to AA for this commercial.

OK, it's finally done. How slow is my system anyway if it took 42 minutes to download a 60 second commercial.

It is an excellent commercial. As I mentioned before AA has an superb marketing department.

Airtahitnui. Yes, it is schlock to get a person to spend money. That is the purpose of advertising. The appreciation of a good ad is the point here.

Next point. If the opening of the "engine" ad isn't a 727 morphing into an MD-80, I'll have my dog eat my neighbors horse. No, that won't work, they're buddies. OK, I'll give up sex for the next 3 months. No, that won't work either. How about if I spend this weekend flogging myself with a wet noodle?

OK... awesome commercial. What really struck me about it though is that I'm was sitting here getting the warm fuzzies, thinking how effectively they were making it seem they were our national carrier and something to be proud of in this hard time, and then I realized that if I was an American employee, I would watch this every morning before I went to work to get myself motivated to help my company represent what I feel is the greatest country in the world. I don't think I've ever seen a commercial before that both got the customers attention, as well as the employees motivated to do the best they can every day at work.

Ok guys, first off the videos are awesome I already watched them several times each. You may think im crazy for mentioning this but I cant help to ask, what type of aircraft is shown right at the beginning of the engine.mpg video? the one passing the sun!! I am completely stumped. I am usually VERY good when it comes to identifying aircraft but this I cant. The aicraft has a Boeing 727/737 nose (you can tell by shape and windshield configuration)..as it passes through the screen you obviously notice it does not have any wing mounted engines so that eliminates a 737. Now as the tail of the plane passes through it does NOT have the 3rd engine in back. Can easily tell by seeing no big air inlet as a 727 does on top of the fuselage in front of the tail. Now you would think that maybe its probably just an MD-80. But its not. The tailcone isnt shaped properly to be an MD-80. It is not the "beaver" tail as they like to call the updated tailcone that is flat shaped on the newer MD-80's nor is it the pointy older style tail cone. You can also notice that the tail is to wide to be an MD-80. You may think this is rediculous that im even talking about this but im being serious I cant tell what it is.
P.S. there is no way that is a Fokker F-100 either.
What do you guys think?

who also used Enya "Storm over Africa"

Done to perfection. The music is great in the back ground, Alos just showing the employees and Travellers doing their everyday thing. I would be proud to work for American, or any airline for that matter, but that commercial just goes to show that the spirit at American is just as strong as ever.
Great work American, Keep it up.

These commercials will go down as the best, rivalling UA's commercial's with "Rhapsody in Blue."
