How Are Olympic Athletes Flying To Slc?

Fri Feb 08, 2002 4:24 am

This poll is just out of curiosity only.

If you know how your country's Olympic team is getting to SLC, please post it here. What airline and aircraft type, scheduled or charter? Are they flying directly to SLC, or stopping in say, LAX or JFK firsrt?

It's be interesting to see if SLC gets any unusual airlines/aircraft.

I don't even know how the US team is getting there (I hope they are flying something better than DL economy though!!!  Smile )

I think many of them have been in SLC for a while now. Each team for a country (hockey, etc.) has a manager or trainer that tells them when they should go there to practice and get used to the environment. It's different for each sport.

Many of the US athletes live and train in the Rocky Mountains so they probably just drove there.

After the games the countries might fly back all together. I believe a South African 744 took all the South African participants home after the '96 games in ATL.

Interesting... however, I was asking HOW (airline, aircraft, etc) they are flying to SLC (those that need to fly), not WHEN.

Polish athletes are flying to SLC on a chartered LOT B763 (or 762). Don't know if they are making any stops though. Well I should actually say they flew.. cause they've been there since January 30th.

Anyone know anything about Asian teams? Are they flying their home carriers all the way to SLC?

Will airlines, or at least some of them, be flying the athletes to SLC for free?

In Sydney, I know several airlines, including most Star Alliance ones, promised free travel for athletes, etc. as an enticement to get them to fly them.

Dutch team probably flew in on KLM or NWA, unless they couldn't get there using those airlines  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
But then, I don't think they came in as a group. Each team (skaters, etc.) probably came in on their own and had to make their own arrangements (probably pay their own tickets too).
I do know the skaters have been somewhere high up in the mountains for several weeks to get acclimated to the altitude, maybe others are doing the same.
Dutch bob team most likely flew in from their latest tournament somewhere in the Alps, etc.
I wish I were flying

I have a feeling depending on the country and sport the athletes participate in they have different travel arrangements. I was at ORD waiting to board a UAL flight to EWR when I saw a sea of Chinese Athletes boarding a UAL flight to Albany, NY. This was January 13th and they just arrived from Beijing (They made an announcement that all Beijing Paxs should go to gate c-? for an immediate boarding to ALB). Anyway I was assuming that they were going to Lake Placid to do some training before the games. I doubt it was all of the athletes for the games but it was at least 40 - 50 members. Hope this helps.

About two weeks or so ago Finland's olympic team flew into JFK on AY.There was a notation in the offload message as to what positions the olympic teams bags were in.I'd assume they chartered on to SLC from JFK.

No, the MD11 wasn't a charter, it turned HEL outbound as usual.
Yes, I actually *do* work for an airline, how about you?

A coworker of mine ran into a bunch of Hungarian athletes in MSP. Probably flew into AMS, took the AMS-MSP DC10 and were connecting to a SLC flight.

Aeroflot flew their 777 nonstop from Moscow to Salt Lake.

as SU323.

If then flew to SEA and flew a scheduled SEA-SVO flight.

I think that tickets were sold on the SVO-SLC because all the athletes would not fill a 777 and im sure some russians would want to see the games.

United is the official carrier of the US olympic team, so I believe they flew them in from the far away parts of the USA.
