Just wondering if MZJ is open for tours. I read something saying that it was but from a couple years ago.
I have never heard of it being open for tours. If it does i will go for sure
Indeed they are. When Evergreen operated the storage facility, they were out of compliance for many years by restricting access to a public facility. Previously the only way to access it was by landing there, but no services were offered. I did a couple dozen landings and TGLs there around 2008-2010, but really all you could do was taxi back for departure and look at airplanes. If you stopped for longer than a couple of minutes, they'd send someone out to run you off. Their policy was a remnant of the airport's CIA/Air America history, with Evergreen itself being a longtime well-documented CIA contractor/front company.
When Evergreen went under around 2014, a new company bought their assets at MZJ to continue the operation. The company and the state came to an agreement to bring the airport back into compliance by allowing public access as required by law — with caveats. While the guard shack now stands empty, access to the airfield or facilities still isn't permitted without a tours being prearranged. Since there aren't really any public access facilities like an FBO, there's really no other reason to be there other than to see airplanes. Because said airplanes are worth quite a lot of money, many of which are stored by air carriers paying good money for their safe keeping, all visitors require escort.
I don't know if the details in this article are still accurate on how to arrange a tour (it's from 2015 when they first started opening things up), but it could point you in the right direction. As far as I know, they're still being offered, but it may be dependent on their schedule, not yours. Hope that helps.http://www.azcentral.com/story/travel/a ... /70499204/
