Next AIRLINERS.net Opening Page Aircraft..........

Fri Feb 08, 2002 10:37 am

I was already thinking of posting this question before the inquiry post on the current 747-400 A.net uses on the top of the page.

What should the next aircraft be?

Should it be another 747-400 with a different angle?....
or should it be the A380?......
or should it be the Sonic Cruiser?.....
or should it be the timeless Concorde?...

I wouldn't want to be the one to make the decision, that's for sure. If I HAD to pick though, I think I'd chose the Sonic Criuser. Basically because it is the next generation airliner of the future.

What would you pick?

(Maybe an actual poll should be taken, eh?)

I still want to know how the NWA 747-400 was chosen for the current top-of-the-page image.

Sonic Cruiser

The A380 looks like some kind of flying conehead. Then again the 747 isn't that visually pleasing either.

I agree with NZ767 to a point. I think the next masthead should be a NW 744 in the Northwest Orient colors. Clean, simple and yet expressive. In other words, I like it the way it is.

747 forever. There´s never been a more pupular air transport, and probably never will. At least for the forseeable future, there´s nothing even on the horizon.

The aircraft at the Top should be the most significant Aircraft of all time. It has to be the 747 over the 737. The 747 being the original and only surviving widebody. (RIP L10-11 and DC10 & MD11)

Still being produced 32 years later and still a great plane it is respected the world over by the airlines and the people as the "Icon" of commercial jet Transportation. More commonly refered to as the "Jumbo" the 800,000 lb humped monster is recognised the world over as the Queen of the Skies.

There is something about that flightdeck perched at the front of the Hump above the lower deck that symbolises something special. The A380 may be bigger but it certainly does not look it, in fact looks silly with the flight deck located beneath the upper deck.

The A380 will never be as significant nor will it be as common throughout the worlds airports, nor will it be operated by as many airlines and will surely NEVER DISPLACE the 747 as the queen of the skies. They may call it the super Jumbo, but there is only one Jumbo the 747.

So leave the Airliners.net Top Page as it is.

Hkgspotter.... check your facts before making brash statements re A/C sales!

It should remain as a 747, but maybe a different 747 from the current one, in any case, I think it should be the 747 not because boeing is better then airbus (Which it is  Smile JUST KIDDING) and not because the 744 looks nicer then others, but because the 747 is the most recognized airliner ever built, even to non-aviation people everyone knows what a 747 is. The purpose of this website is to be a resource / database for everyone not just aviation buffs, and as such the logo should be something that is easily associated with airlines by all people....

Suggestion. Implement a java script that will bring up say, a different plane each time the page is refreshed. As someone said else said. Maybe you could choose the ten most popular ones or something.

Let's make it the one of the classics. Either a 707, DC-8, a Comet, or a Caravelle.

I feel they should leave it. I mean, a Northwest Airlines (The best airline) aircraft, on the homepage of one of the best airliner sites. Needs to stay the same. They go hand in hand.

My 2c...
Why was it chosen?
As far as I know it was chosen because front-on shots of the original 747 weren't easy to find, and the shown plane, the first 747-400, was a historical mammoth, the culminization of a jet giving new meaning to flight for more than three decades.

Should we get a new one?
I think we should have two polls on the front page, the first asking, "Does this website need a new masthead airliner?" The second, assuming the first receives a majority Yes, reading, "Which of the following should be the new Airliners.Net masthead airliner?" with the options,

1. The original Commit (sp?!!), first jetliner in the world.
2. The 707, popularly recognized "first jetliner", albeit half of them have crashed.
3. The 747, as seen currently, the first and generally accepted-to-be greatest widebody.
4. The A380, the world's newest, largest, jet.
5. The L-1011, among the most popular airliners ever built, with a nice centralized appearence as well.
6. The Concorde, the only surviving supersonic commercial jetliner.
7. The Lockheed Constellation, as with the TriStar, one of the more popular airliners ever built.
8. The 777, Boeing's vastly-popular twin-aisle-twin jet which is seen in many cases to be replacing the 747, an ideal metaphor for it being chosen as a new masthead.
9. "Other", include in your post on this topic your selection.

Even Better Idea...

Sat Feb 09, 2002 4:51 am

I think there is a huge potential for $$$ here. Johan, or some other representative of Airliners.Net, goes to the big airlines of the world and asks them each how much they want to be advertised on the world's largest, most popular website. We then explain that we are looking for a new masthead jet, showing the current as an example. Whichever airline offers the most money to be advertised gets the deal, and their largest airplane gets professionaly photographed by the airline and posted.

Just posted this on another thread http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/732291. Thank god for copy and paste...

As much as I would like to see a Sonic Cruiser [I think it would be even better looking than the already awesome Concorde!], I don't see it as being commercial viable though. Boeing is [rightfully!] proud of the economic efficiency of the tripple seven. The 777 [by many it is seen as a 747 replacement] carries 350-400 pax with two big-ass turbofans. Now install these same two big-ass turofans in a 200-250 pax jet. I think you can do the maths on fuel consumtion per pax for yourself!

Airbus is selling A380's because of fuel-efficiency and space. However the A380 offers only 15-20%improvement in fuel effiecency per seat compared to the 744. Now how on earth can you make money if you have only 200-250 pax paying on an aircraft that consumes the same fuel as a 400 pax jet!
Ticket price is going to be very high, even to today's standard. I guess most pax would rather prefer flying 13 hrs on an A380 than 11 hrs on a Sonic Cruiser. In the A380 they would have upto twice as much space per pax compared to the SC, which will have a cabin much more reflecting that of a Concorde, maybe 3-3 seating instead of 2-2, and even pay less money for the trip on the A380.
On these very long haul flights, 15% reduction in flight time is not as atractive as a 50-100% increase in personel space! So the battle is IMHO between speed and comfort [not to mentioned DVT syndrom in a cramped SC cabin].

I wouldn't be surprised at all if this SC bird goes the same path as the 7J7 [who remembers this once would-be Boeing bestseller]. The only reason that the 7J7 came along, was to deter customers away from the 320! Boeing is doing the same thing with the Sonic Cruiser I'm affraid.
Boeing was trying to launch the 747-500/600 for years and had put huge amount of engineering efforts in it. And all of a sudden, when Airbus pretty much looked like winning the Jumbo battle, Boeing pulls a rabbit out of their hat called SC. I don't think so!

I don't really care what airplane is on the opening page, but what would be nice to see is airliners.net having there own livery. It's a well known site to any aviation enthusiats and there are alot of artistic members of this site. So, I say have a friendly competition for who wants to participate in designing a "exclusive" livery and at the end have a vote poll like the ones we have in the home page to see which livery would look the best for the home page aircraft. Also, if we all can't decide on a specific airplane then change every month, or 3 months .....but the livery has to stay the same on every aircraft.
