Current! America West Fleet Update

Sat Feb 09, 2002 3:47 pm

For those who are interested, the following is the composition of America West's fleet as of Friday February 8, 2002:

31 Airbus A319-100s
46 Airbus A320-200s
9 Boeing 737-200s
38 Boeing 737-300s
12 Boeing 757-200s

136 aircraft are in service, which is a reduction from 146 aircraft prior to September 11th.

Only 4 737-300s (N156AW, N158AW, N168AW, N331AW) remain in the old livery.

Is HP just about complete with repainting their planes to the new livery?

Yes. All they have left to be painted are those 4 737-300s that were listed.

Any idea how long the 732s will remain in the fleet?

I found it surprising that America West parked and/or terminated leases on several 733s while keeping the 732s in the air. I am sure that there was a good financial reason for this move, but I would guess that the 732s will not be around that much longer. Any info?

The complete phaseout of the 737-200s should begin sometime in mid-2003 with the introdution of the A318 to the fleet. They have ordered 15 A318s and they will be brought on-line as they terminate leases of all its 737-200s and some 737-300s. America West is hoping to become all-Airbus, but it can't find a suitable replacement for the 757-200. The A321 just doesn't have the range or the lift capabilities of the 757 or A320, which is especially important during the hot, dry summers in Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Thanks jmc1975, i had forgot that HP was also getting the A318 for its lighter routes and it is logical that the A318s will replace the +/- 100 pax 73S aircraft.

I also had heard that HP would like to replace its 757 fleet, many (most) of which are early-build ex-Eastern examples and the ones originally built for Repulic which Northwest never took delivery of after the merger (NW has PW powered 757s and the Republic ordered RR powered aircraft).......Airbus does have a "gap" in its otherwise complete lineup between the A321-200 and A330-200; the A321 (which is a great airliner.......I am not being anti-Airbus) simply does not have the flexibilty of a 757 when it comes to range and payload. Its really not fair to compare the A321 and B757, they are very different aircraft with different capabilites; the A321 is simply the largest member of the A32X family (as the 739 is the largest 737NG), while the 757 is a larger/heavier aircraft with much more in common with the 767 family than the 737 family.

Money is tight now, I guess the 757s will stay around for the medium term future.

I think America West should just keep the 757 in their fleet plan for years to come. Maybe do away with some of the older ones they have and lease or buy some newer 757-200's or evan -300's. Like everyone is saying the A321 just doesnt have the range or power of the 757........

As for the fleet paint update, I live on approach to PHX and I often see a lot of older scheme aircraft. I dont think all of the 732's are painted in new colors yet, I could be wrong but I also dont think just 4 737's remain. I often see tons of older scheme aircraft flying a mere 1500 feet over my head. HP also had some A320's in older scheme but I am sure those are painted by now. I remember seeing some older scheme A320's this past summer.

Eric-

N186AW was the last and final 737-200 painted in the new livery and it just left the paint shop in Roswell, NM 2 days ago. As for the A320s, the last one was repainted in December 2000 (N624AW). You must be thinking about the previous summer when you saw the vintage A320.

My brother works as a A&P for AW and has heard that they are going to put off takeing in the new 318's for about 6 months. I did not ask him when they were going to take them..... So 6 months from when?

I could have sworn I just saw a A320 in old colors a few months ago, at least since I started going to school here in Tempe which was 1 1/2 years ago.

American West flew over Mexico with B737-700 if I'm not wrong, but recently he left the B737 and started to send A320.

America West used to serve Mexico City daily with a 737-300. In October, the equipment was upgraded to an A320, and in December, that was increased to 2x daily.
