Coolest Thing You Have Done At An Airport?

Sat Feb 09, 2002 7:13 pm

What is the coolest thing you ever have done at an airport?

For me we have to go back to the fall break in 2000. Me and my grandparents headed out to Torp (maybe better knowwn as ryanairs "Oslo South Airport") Our plan was to watch the arrival of a BY 757 (the only come a few times a week)
Ok, we are standing near a fence (very close to the airports fire station) Then a smaller prop lands, and this man, who is the lead fire officer, comes out and asks me if we are vaiting for the 757. We says yes, and then he asks if I want a ride in theri brand new fire engine. Offcoures I want. We walk out to the engine, and drives out to the general apron (with a few cessnas etc.). The demonstrates the foam canon (offcourse not using the foam). Then the mighty 757 touches down on the rwy and passes uss within a very short distance.
This airport do not have any airbridges, and as we follows the aircraft to the terminal, we stops right nfront of the cockpit as the aircraft comes to a halt. We are so close to it. Then we asks the twr for permition to drive town the rwy. They give us thumbs up, and we enter the rwy via twy W. Its so cool to cruise down the rwy in 80-100 km/h in a big fire truck. About two thirds down (or should i say up, since e are driving northe) we vacates the rwy and drives back to the fire station. We walks back in to the office, and he shows me some drawings that shows different emergency prosedures on different SK aircrafts (althoug neither of the aircrats are used into Torp)

For me this was a very great experience, althoug i guess that i haven't managed to share it very good with you.

I remember back in 1995...
I flew Business Class to MEX from FRA on a Lufthansa 747-400 (D-ABVD) with my sister and during the flight I spent about 8 hours or so in the cockpit but since the question was the coolest thing we did @ an airport I'll skip it...
After we arrived in MEX with checked Delta Air Lines since we actually wanted to go to DFW but then we missed the last Dallas flight by 5 or 10 minutes so we were forced to spend the night there.
But since me and my sister didn't want to go to an hotel for the night we decided to just sleep in the terminal. So we looked for a good spot and there was like a small brickwall about 50cm's high so we used it as a bed. It wasn't comfortable but dirtcheap Big grin
The next morning we got up and ended up taking Aeromexico to Dallas which was my first MD-87 flight.

Being a guest in a runway inspection vehicle at LHR. That was really really cool. It's quite an experience to rush down the runway as planes approach, vacate when they're on short final, and then drive towards the runway again as the plane shoots past very closely. And you never get an impression of the speed of a 744 unless it really thunders past just a few metres ahead...

One of my friends worked at AMS airport and because he new I am an aviation maniac, he invited me for a personel tour at the airport. He drove me arround the whole aiport. Hangers, Apron, Cargo, everything. I have got an excellent pic were I am leaning in a nose wheel of a KL 744. If you walk underneath a big 747 is absolute fantastic.

Well, I have only done one thing at airports, but then I have done that one thing countless times over and over again.

I have waited.

I have waited for:
- baggage carts to show up
- check-in
- security check
- gates to open
- planes to arrive
- planes to be repaired
- fog to lift
- ATC computers to get alive after unexpected failure
- immigration control
- next plane after being rebooked following missed connection
- baggage to arrive at baggage retrieval
- busses, trains, taxies to finally leave the airport
- queued up behind a broken parking ticket machine being repaired.

I have seen people do other things at airports - drink beer and get drunk and such. But basically I think that they have also just been waiting.

Probably when me and my sister had two connecting flights at FRA (both LH) and the inbound one was late, so when we landed we had to get into the crew bus and they drove like hell to the transit desk, ran the tickets through the machine, then rushed us out (still with the crew bus) to the a/c waiting on the apron. We made it, but our luggage didn't...

Taking a ride in the Signature Flight Support van to your plane at DCA. This was a Cessna Citation 550 which a friend of mine flies.

Escorted a Northwest DC-9 (while sitting in the cockpit) one night years ago to do an engine runup (I worked in Airport Ops at the time), and the mechanic let me sit in the right seat and drive it down the taxiway.

I would have to say hang around Kai Tak airport and the near area's for a good majority of the day over a couple day span... I would say thats the coolest thing I have done at an airport, or being able to spend multiple hours out at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport with the likes of a couple good mates, Craig Murray and Frank Schaefer! Some of my best times at an airport for sure!

Cheers!

The coolest? Apart from falling down the stairs while my eyes were in the direction of a very pretty lady was... doing a trial photoshoot for Kartika Airlines at CGK.

Arrived at CGK one late afternoon, sat in their small ops room, then received a pass. Took the crew car, went through the security checkpoint, and we were at the apron of terminal 1. Sat underneath the airbridge, took photos and had close ups on other planes on adjacent gates or passing our stand. (poor light though).

The jet we were waiting for arrived. Walked up across the apron, and start taking photos as I walked backwards. No earplugs, I ended up 2 meters in front of a running JT8D-9A engine. Did a walk around of the airplane during the turn around, at that point, the captain said, "let's take a ride" Took a j/s ride to Semarang and back, never left the plane (coz security in SRG would arrest me without a boarding pass and the pass I have was for CGK). Back at CGK, j/s ride all the way, spent an hour at the aircraft after arrival, taking night inside shots.

Had a nice chat with the cabin crew, then went home...

My best day ever at an airport  Smile

Does watching some Korean "Americas Funniest Home Video Show" thing count?

Otherwise, playing poker at SEL (Seoul Kimpo) for Wong, while waiting in transit for you KE flight to Frankfurt!

A bit off topic, yes I know, but the coolest thing I've done in flight, was to play Blackjack on board KE905, and where the looser had to ask the F/A for another round of Carlsberg. Fortunantly, we were hardened drinkers, so none of us got drunk, even though we got through around 8-10 rounds.
