Greetings:

I would choose TWA. Their history is rich in aviation firsts. Just some quick examples. Their long partnership with Douglas which started with the DC-1. They were the first to fly the 747 coast to coast on domestic service. From the days of Howard Huges to the nightmare years of Carl Ichan you'll have plenty of material to choose from.

Thanx
Tom

I think a report on Southwest might be appropriate, if you are wanting to write about a success story.

If you need any info (and believe me, I have plenty) you may e mail me at gfranklin@hot.rr.com

Well you can go with Pan Am. It would be interesting to study their decline from a once pround airline. Then you have UAL. With everything going on with UAL right now it would be a perfect report on airline MISManagement.

I would say that you cannot go wrong with choosing any airline. Whether or not the chosen carrier succeeds, every airline has had an interesting past (and present, if applicable).

Should I go for Overseas Airlines? I looked first at QANTAS, but they weren't very helpful when I e-mailed them. I then looked to Air Tahiti Bui, and they were nice. Waht do you all think on overseas airlines?

Do a report on Fedex. They are an airline, and they were a tremendous force in making efficient, cheap overnight delivery possible. Talk about how Fred Smith got a 'C' on his senior paper because his idea "was not feasible." The paper was essentially the blueprints for the company. It is amazing how one can make the "unfeasible" into a multi-billion dollar empire.

The best might just be United Airlines, and their fall from grace of late.

Have a look at the Unions and the share option schemes.

Otherwise, look further afield.. Swissair, on how not to run an airline group.

Air Canada, and how they have grown, taking over Canadian Airlines. Would be really neat as a Canadian to read.

Learning from failed attempts is as important as learning from success stories. PeoplExpress could make an interesting case study here. The major challenge is to find first-hand accounts from airlines that are no longer with us.

Or think about Lauda Air. The Founder Nicki Lauda (a few times Formula 1 Racing World Champion) hadn’t much support from the Austrian DOT. They hadn’t allowed him to fly the trunk routes to protect AUA. After many Route request he asked them if they don’t allowed him to fly to the "normal/big" Destination, then let me fly to the farrest Point, to a dest. AUA never served, to Australia.
Which was a very strange Route for a new found Airline, but as usual for Nicki Lauda it was well taught (Australia have a big south German and Austrian Community etc...) . He offered one of the best service, later with cooks on board and many other improvements.
But then, after years, his Airline was bought by AUA and he was fired as CEO and later from his second job at "his" Airline as B777 Pilot.

I left out a lot from the history from NG, e.g. the B763 crash, Nicki Lauda great technique knowledge, so with all it’s up & down it’s seams to be a really interesting Airline.

P.S. I also think Nicki Lauda would support you, if I’m not wrong he is now working for the F1 Jaguar Racing Team
