UPS And There Fleet Plan

Mon Feb 11, 2002 4:18 pm

Will UPS ever get any 747-400's? Or are they going to load up on the MD-11's they are now getting?

From what I've heard, I doubt it.

If memory serves they signed on for 50 some odd MD-11s (number may be off, don't have it in front of me.) At any rate, they really don't need -400Fs, not for what they're hauling.

Just my 2 bits though...

Would you happen to know how many MD-11's they have in service now? I know they have 1 for sure, because I have seen it in ANC.

Thanks for your thoughts.........

We have 3 MD-11s in service now. There are lots of rumors of future fleet plans. JAL was the source for the rest of the firm orders for MD-11s, and apparently they do not want to get rid of them now. This leaves Boeing without a source for MD-11s for us. The latest rumor has that Boeing is in talks with us to take in trade our 3 MD-11s and in return have us purchase converted 747-400 pax planes, mostly from United.

converted 744s? Cool. I'd rather see Converted 744s in UPS colors than the 744F because at least the converted 744s will still have the full upperdeck

Interesting rumour. UA is said to be close of selling about 10 744s.
I don´t think they will dispose them unless there is a good-paying customer.

Wow that would be cool to see converted 744's! Any idea when that will happen if it will?

The MD-11 is solid for now. 691UP has been retired (oldest 747 flying) There was a fleet up of 747-200's but with the 100's being some of the oldest in the air, there will be a need. Boeing offered the 747-300 conversion with the MD-11. The 747-400 conversion has been mentioned also.

At the moment though volume is down for the whole industry. A300's have been defered for 7 months at the moment and no plans have been made for further purchases unless there is a drastic need for additional lift.

Any rumors of a 757-300F floating around?

What Did They Do Before?

Wed Feb 13, 2002 11:48 am

Why does it seem that UPS is just now starting to get any planes. How did they haul their cargo before?

B1C17L1011,

Don't know where you have been. UPS has had DC-8's, 747's and 757's for years now. They are one of Boeing's biggest 757 customers.

a pilot whos been there since the late 80s said that management is always claiming the 8's are on the way out....... he guess they'd be there longer than the 75s  Smile but seriosly, why all the a300s? they are the biggest pain to load.

Guys, if you want a source for UPS search for DE727UPS, and see if he has an email adress.. I know for a fact he flies for UPS... He is very reliable on UPS info.

A whle back, I beleive he told me the 8's were to be around until 2010.

I was reading a report the other day that talked about how there is a shortage of truck drivers and the railroads are nearing capacity despite the downturn in the economy. Yet, demand for UPS and Fedex continue to climb.

How does this relate, well if they can't put them on trucks or trains, that leaves planes. UPS is probably going to have to expand its fleet and have almost a zero retirement rate for its aircraft to keep up with demand. The only other option I see is to start relying on commerical pax flights more.

Or they could contract out more flying but you can only do so much of that too.
