Map Viewing Software On Airliners...

Just got back from TATE 99 in Taipei...

On the way back the aircraft encountered headwinds all the way and heaps of turbulence...

However, when the plane is actually in the turbulence, I felt the plane was actually flying up and down (?? but estimation based on the stomah lurches and body being forced onto the seat), but on the flying map on the personal entertainment system, it displays 29,000ft without gaining or losing height, why?

i think that the pilot inputs the speed and altitude that he expects to hold. Either that or the system is too slow to recognize the changes in Alt.

Captain747, thanx for one answear, but that can't be it. Look at it during takeoff, the speed displays changes a few milliseconds and the software updates automatically.

Does it maintain 29000 ft exactly or does it vary by a few feet say +/- 20 ft.

One theory could be local air pressure changes during passage through the turbulence this coupled with a barometric altimeter could mean that it registers 29000 ft all the way through.

Yu said you "felt it climb". Golden rule in IFR never trust your sense's. Even though you feel like your climbing you may not be. Your body like to play tricks on you.

CYXX, you said the body likes playing tricks with you, you're partly right. HOwever, during climb the when the flaps retract, you get the same 'losing height' feeling, that is, your stomach lurches.

As CYXX says, you can be fooled. If you're climbing and suddenly your rate of climb decreases you'll feel as if you're falling for a second or two even though you're still climbing. The reason is that your momentum causes you to keep climbing at the same rate briefly while the seat, attached to the plane, is no longer climbing as fast and drops away from you. Unless you're really unlucky, you'll fall back down on to your seat fairly quickly.

As usual, I'm just waffling on because I don't know the answer to your original question but it sounds like some kind of "damping" as has already been suggested. I am curious to know just where the information on the screen comes from.

What Is The Software Anyway?

Thanx 4 such a scientific answear David, but the main puzzle is, what is that software displaying the inflight info to the passengers?

It also seems that this software is owned by all airlines, because basically all airlines have them.
