Regarding KLM's new route to Vaxjo, it is perhaps worth noting that Estonian Air flew Vaxjo-Amsterdam in 2014. I've got a feeling (but not 100% certain) that Estonian's routes was operated as a KLM codeshare.

Amsterdam is not a huge metropolis and KLM has traditionally had a much higher proportion of connecting passengers compared to the likes to British Airways / Air France who have a greater propotion of (more profitable) passengers that begin / end their journeys in London or Paris. Competing head-on against the likes of Lufthansa would nevere have been sustainable long term so to become a major carrier KLM have had to specialilse in being the main European hub based airline at plenty of minor airpots all over Europe (particularly the UK and Scandinavia) as well as other continents

Transfer passengers account for abt 38% of the passengers traveling trough Amsterdam airport. The cities in de Randstad area (western part of the Netherlands) sum up as a big metropolis in terms of economy and overall turnover. In the direct Amsterdam and suburban area live about 2 million people. and the south-wing of the Randstad (Rotterdam-the Hague area) even has more then 3 million inhabitants.
So there is also plenty of O/D traffic to be expected on the route. think this route will be a success. and a great addition for a airport like Vaxjo

Since KLM is now so big in the Nordic region, I wonder if they'll ever expand their operations into Finnish secondary airports? TKU, TMP OUL? At the moment Finland is the only country in the Nordics where KL operates only to the capital city. Would there be enough demand for AMS and beyond from the regional airports? Any thoughts?

Seems like the whole truth is not presented in the press release or some vital information is hidden as the destinations relevant for the 35% reduction is only the 11 airports specified in the press release.

* The new incentive scheme of 35% will benefit airlines that provide feeder traffic between CPH and regional airports more than three times a day on the same route. At present, this covers the following destinations: Billund, Bornholm, Midtjylland, Sønderborg, Aalborg and Aarhus, as well as Bergen, Gothenburg, Stavanger, Vilnius and Gdansk.

To my knowledge, there is a whole range of destinations out of CPH with more than 3 daily departures.
My immediate thoughts where their lack of intercontinental connections.
However both GOT and BGO sees scheduled IC services.

So why only these 11 and why no insight in the qualification details?

Those 11 airports are all regional feeder airports to CPH.

CPH has over the last few years lost a lot of transit traffic from many of those 11 airports to AMS as KLM Cityhopper has taken a lot of that traffic using AMS as their hub instead of CPH. While OSL, ARN and HEL have increased traffic dramatically year by year, then CPH has struggled to keep business flat.

This is an attempt to reverse that trend, or at least stop it. Wonder if it is too little too late. KL, and to a minor extent LH, AF and BA, have already taken over European and intercontinental traffic from the western half of Denmark and to a minor extent western Norway.

People in Jutland and western Norway have over the last decade or so discovered that AMS is a cheaper and more convenient hub than CPH. It will be an uphill struggle to reverse that.

But it does not make sense with only theese 11 airport. There are many other routes served more than 3 daily that are not capital airports. EU does not allow support on designated routes. It must be based on some criterias that have not yet been presented to the public.

Yes, the NIKI deal falling through was mentioned. The spokesperson from EW said that the airline is still interested in markets in the area and flights may possibly be started from the start or during the summer season next year.

Sas and Avinor has an agreement that will make OSL a major hub for SAS, and will help Avinor increase traffic by 4% annually. It is reported by Aftenposten that they will fly to L.A, Chicago, Houston, Minneapolis, Toronto and Maybe China and South-Korea.

I believe the Swedish aviation tax has something to do with this decision as well.

Is there enough traffic to support that plan or is it mostly connecting traffic?

I wonder if SAS will reduce flights from Sweden. Let's see how will the aviation tax affect the air traffic to and from Sweden, if not at all.

From the article it says: In the agreement with SAS, no routes are mentioned, but from what Aftenposten have learned, there may be routes to Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Minneapolis and Toronto, Canada. In addition, routes to China and South Korea are mentioned in the agreement, and it is a major commitment.

https://www.aftenposten.no/okonomi/i/zL ... e-markedet

I interpret that as, Aftenposten reports that they believe these are the possible routes.

A part of the plan is better transfer for passenger connecting from international flights to domestic. This agreement includes more airports in Norway as well. I am curious if SAS will reduce flights from Sweden or not. From how I understand the agreement, it will give OSL more traffic, already next year. But their new A350 will not arrive for some time.

The question is, who will buy them? Lufthansa is of course a hot candidate and have been rumored to be close many times. However they have never gone through with any deal.

It's great to see Finnair expanding so significantly and the huge growth seems to continue:

Finnair remains 'convinced that alliances are still important'

Finnair CCO Juha Jarvinen said the carrier remains "convinced that alliances are still important" and aims to pursue closer cooperation with oneworld members beyond the North Atlantic market, where Finnair collaborates closely with American Airlines and British Airways. Mr Jarvinen reported Finnair also plans to pursue "more cooperation across Alliance borders".

But it is still not possible because of the restrictions in Shanghai". He reported Finnair also considers Indonesia and Malaysia promising markets for future expansion.

Finnair sees potential for expansion in Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Mr Jarvinen noted Finnair plans to operate services to Stuttgart, Hannover and Cologne in summer 2018 and views Basel as an "interesting" destination for possible future expansion. Also, Finnair is not interested in A380 as the aircraft is "too big" and the freight capacity is "too low". Finnair will not order A350-1000s at the moment. The short-haul fleet will be renewed at some point.

Norwegian adds more capacity to HEL in S18

In summer 2018, Norwegian will add almost 300,000 seats (15% more than in S17) from Helsinki. Frequencies to Pristina, Athens, Chania and Varna will increase from 1x weekly to 2x weekly. Routes to Venice, Bourgas and Pula will be operated 3x weekly and Dubrovnik 4x weekly.

But unfortunately, no long-haul routes from Helsinki announced yet.

The original article sounds very optimistic, setting goals of almost doubling the passengers. It also hints for a new order of widebodies, supposedly 350's that they seem to like so much. Is it realistic?

For the short-haul fleet they want to give all options open, at least publicly.

I think the reason is the same as why low-cost carriers have stayed away from HEL. The destinations you mentioned are significantly farther away from AMS than most of the smaller destinations they serve in Scandinavia. Just some time ago LH decided against flying to TKU citing the close proximity to HEL.

Is this wishful thinking or is there any more going in the background to justify the expectation right now? So far nothing has happened during a decade or so of speculations. At least Lufthansa is busy with other acquisitions now. (And IMO Lufthansa should not be allowed to buy it although I am quite sure it will be allowed, if it just makes come concessions. Nevertheless, if there are true concessions and true options for competition, I may be sufficiently satisfied.)

Agreed, I would see ay+sk maybe with iag? Of course it is pretty complicated with all the agreements and alliances issues. I love LH, but in the name of the competition it's not a good idea to be absorbed by them. Another option is to go with Chinese like TP.

This would depend on the specific travel requirements and population density in the catchment area around the regional airports.

More A350s at ARN, great! Any idea which flight?

That means 10x weekly A350? Or is it only in the Winter they are flying 17x weekly to ARN?

Thank you for sharing some more info on this Joint Vision plan. It is a huge deal, and I was wondering if it deserved its own thread, but started, by posting it here.

Reminds me of SAS change of strategy to also focus on ARN with LAX and HKG.

The effect is visible on CPH's traffic numbers, with a sharp decline in traffic to/from ARN. Strangely as the routes also represent connectivity out of CPH. Although you can only see the isolated effect on ARN-CPH, these passengers where probably mostly transferring in CPH. The loss of passengers for CPH is therefore probably around double the loss of passengers presented on ARN-CPH.

If Norway also can sort out the customs issues, I believe the negative impact on CPH will be bigger than after SAS focus on ARN. If OSL is also able to attract more feed from Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim, the decline of transfer on CPH will be ugly.

It's a good reason to reflect over this news as it will probably also change the one hub policy of SAS.

I can't help it though for thinking that GOT is still in the shadow of SAS despite having one of the largest industrial areas in Scandinavia.

Incredible - the next day after the SAS announcement, Avinor published a retraction note, saying the agreement is open to everyone, not only SAS.

It wasn't announced as an exclusive agreement, although media and bloggers made it sound like it, but not surprised neither actually understood the agreement

Competition law prohibits this

Seems like Finnair will fly to Alanya (Gazipasa) for whole year-round next year.

Apparently, Norwegian has received rights to fly over Russia on some departures out of ARN and CPH. Good for them!

And Merry Christmas everyone!

Merry Christmas!

Good news for Norwegian, perhaps we'll see their 787 in HEL in the future. Was thinking Thailand especially, Finnair needs some competition there.

On 23 Dec Lufthansa started seasonal once weekly service from FRA to Kuusamo (KAO) in Northern Finland, not Lapland but the "Reindeer zone" still. This is the first scheduled international service for little Kuusamo.

In Finnish Lapland Lufthansa serves Ivalo (FRA-IVL) and Kittilä (MUC-KTT) this winter.

Little competition would be good indeed. As far as I know Thai Airways planned BKK-HEL about 10 years ago, but I don't know is HEL in plans anymore. HEL must be the largest hub of Norwegian without any long haul flights operated by DY. Instead of HEL, DY plans to launch long haul routes from small airports (in terms of seats offered by DY/D8) such as MXP, that has only 2 routes or AMS, that has only 4 routes. Norwegian's seat capacity is also much less at those airports than at HEL. That's why I find the lack of DY long haul flights from HEL slightly strange but I think Norwegian keeps eye mostly on O/D markets.
