Airport Baggage Handling System Has Problems

Officials at Detroit Metro Airport have hit a snag. The baggage handling system at the new Midfield Terminal failed several tests this past weekend. The system's computerized bar code scanner reportedly failed to read the code on every bag during testing. The Midfield Terminal is scheduled to open on Feb. 24. The terminal's opening has already been delayed twice because of construction problems and extra security measures.

I don't think the problem is as bad as it sounds, and I think the problems will be nailed out in time for an on-time opening.

NW has invested over $1 billion, and I don't think they are going to sit on their thumbs and let their baby be delayed again.

Expect the WorldGateway to open on schedule on the 24th.

DTW is going to have to try very hard to make a baggage system as worthless as DEN's automated baggage system, which btw is still mostly inoperative.
I guess if all else fails, DTW could just adopt a traditional bag & cart method like DEN did, at least until the bugs are worked out.

Having work extensivly with United Airlines' automated baggage system in Denver, I regret to inform you Mikeybien that the system ISNT mostly inoperative....While some parts of the system are not in use (by choice of the airlines) other parts are used nonstop and options to bring other parts of the system online are not to far off....

While the opening day of Denver International was pushed back many times due to problems with the system, it got a far worse name than it ever should have...As with any system out there something that massive and complex, there will be bugs. The system is constantly being upgraded and new things arise daily, its part of game....

Give it time, DTW's new system will run and take improvements here and there...

I stand corrected... I was under the impression that nothing had changed since I worked at F9 and the only part of the DEN baggage system that did work was the UA outbound bags. As a taxpayer of Denver I'm happy to hear that things are coming online, I was under the impression it would never be fixed.

Well currently you would be correct with United O/B system being the operational system...However United is the only airline to pay to maintain this system now and use it....Recently they cut a loop for the widebody gates that runs out to C Councourse before looping back, for queuing purposes....With United/United Express' presence on "A" a study is going on to see what it would take to bring online......Again it just comes down to what the airlines are wishing to do....

Haven't been down to DEN latly to see whats going on, but who knows with all the cutbacks...Ry

Thanks favre....I talked to a few people working out the glitches at the new terminal...it is opening Feb. 24th..the main problem is the access road from the old mail sort area to the new one...they need this open for the postal service and NWA to move out to the new building...that is the only major problem right now, besides a few minor bag belt problems...which will happen anyways...under 2 weeks..we shall see
