If Bermuda II Gets Scrapped...

Thu Feb 14, 2002 8:35 am

...what will happen to BA/AA alliance prospects? Will/should they reapply for antitrust immunity straightaway? CO, NW, DL's objections to the alliance would hold no water, because they all center around LHR.

Furthermore, if Bermuda II is scrapped, how will airlines like CO, NW, US, and DL get into LHR? Will the EU scrap everyone's slot rights, and reappropriate them? I think this would be opposed not only by BA and AA, but also by bmi and UA.

Information/commentary anyone?

Bermuda II won't be scrapped, but it was, yes, without a doubt, AA and BA would once again try to join forces. How other carriers will get in is a tough one. If AA/BA were to allign themselves, then they would probably have to give up slots (which they would not agree too, IMO), but, if not, NW, CO, US, and DL will just have to get in line and wait like other carriers, such as AeroMexico.

Actually, with the EU soon taking over negotiating powers vis-a-vis international aviation treaties, Bermuda II will most certainly be scrapped. I cannot believe that the European Commission would not find the treaty anti-competitive.

BA and AA were asked to give up 224 weekly slots. Thats quite a lot if you ask me.

224 slots a week is alot. However,if BA were guranteed those 224 slots a week back if (AKA :When)there is further expansion at LHR then it might swing the decision perhaps.
