Delta Air Lines May Lease 777s To SAA

Fri Feb 15, 2002 2:27 am

Yesterday the 13th February Delta Air Lines flew a B777 to Johannesburg along with Boeing personnel for the purpose of demonstrating the B777 to SAA. If SAA like the aircraft, Delta & Boeing will arrange for the delivery of the March 2002 scheduled delivery of Delta's triple 7, (7008) to SAA for a three year lease. In addition Delta is proposing that they lease 2 additional existing B777s to SAA out of their current inventory. Got the info from a friend at Delta Air Lines. Hope SAA orders their own 777s. This is quite cool! The 777 would look really excellent in SAA livery (I presume they'd repaint them?). I've just discovered that Manchester is loosing the 777 (reverting to the MD-11) from mid-April, which is a shame. Does anyone know the planned 777 fleet utilisation for the summer?

cheers, Phil.

I am curious, the economy will improve around the globe within 6-12 months, why would Delta want to decrease it's fleet?

Wouldn't this affect their expansion plans for Asia or some other region of the world? I would hate to see Delta put off expansion because the lack of aircraft after they leased their planes to SAA.

Why not fly JNB themselves? Use the 777 on domestic or European routes until the economy improves.

This is interesting. I thought SAA originally had orders for 777's some time ago, but those orders were cancelled.

I wonder what will happen to the pilots who are scheduled to fly the Delta 777's? Will it be a wet-lease?

This sounds bizarre....Delta's fleet of 777s is SMALL as it is....only 8 a/c currently in service, and that's counting next month's scheduled delivery. So if DL goes through with leasing 3 777s to SAA, that leaves a fleet of only 5 777s. Why would DL even want to bother with maintaining such a small fleet? If DL is intent on shedding a few 777s....they should just dispense with the whole lot of them. Mind you, I sincerely hope they don't....

I'm just as surprised as everyone else of this possibility. On the other hand, why would SAA only get 3 aircraft of this new type? Unless they could lease some other RR powered 777s, perhaps Malaysia Airlines could spare a few? I still SAA will get A340s for the time being but perhaps eventually they will get 777s of their own or lease from ILFC or GECAS. The777Man

Maybe DL because of the slowdown in air travel since 9/11, doesn't need their 777-200ERs for some routes in favor of their smaller 767-300/400ERs.

Well arent some 764's on defer also? I think Dl is very content with the 763ER as the mainstay of the long haul fleet, and the remaing Md11's will serve some of the Ultra long rt'es

Delta spells increased international flying "Air France".

If the campaign is successful, the proposition will generate over $100M in capital and operating expense savings.

DL plans to operate 12 777's by 2005.

The planned SAA transaction would sell 1 A/C and lease 2 others for 36 months.

I heard this rumor last night at work. I don't know how much truth is in it. It came form someone I don't usually get info from. I did notice 7008 is not on the preplan for a preservice check after 3/31. Usually a new aircraft goes through this check right after delivery.

Airbus is offering some of the A340-600 that Swissair cancelled due to its bancruptcy (read that in Flight International). Surely at a good price.

That would be really cool, a 777 would look awesome in SAA colors and also they need some new aircraft... the 747-200's are getting really old

Could this mean that SAA will join the SkyTeam Alliance?
It would be really a good partner, covering a side of the globe currently not well served by the other carriers (with the exception maybe of AF).
But honestly, I thought that the A340-500 and -600 would fit better in SAA needs, being able to replace the older B747s and allowing very long flights from Jo'burg and CapeTown.

Ciao

Would the 772er or 773 be able to fly the same routes at the 744??

Just to point out the following, in case it might become a bit confusing. SAA is NOT retiring its 747-400 fleet. The only aircrafts going are the 747-200/300 and SP series, the 400s are staying.

The B777s can fly almost as far as the B744 but of course lesser cargo and passengers compared to the B744. The B773 can't fly as far as the B744. Hope SAA go for the B777!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
