Airport Mob Kills Afghan Transport Minister!

Fri Feb 15, 2002 7:32 am

From Reuters News Service...
-----------------------------------------------------
DUBAI (Reuters) - Afghan Muslim pilgrims, angry over plane delays, have attacked and killed Afghanistan's interim transport minister at Kabul airport, Arabic-language al-Jazeera television has reported.

It quoted its reporter in the Afghan capital as saying Air Transport and Tourism Minister Abdul Rahman had gone to the airport to leave on a trip abroad when he was attacked on Thursday by a large number of disgruntled pilgrims awaiting flights to Saudi Arabia.

There was no immediate confirmation of the report by Afghan officials. Foreign journalists were unable to go to the airport to check on reports of a disturbance there because of a curfew.

More than 5,000 Afghans planning to leave for the annual haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia have been told that foreign aircraft are being leased for the trip as Afghanistan's Ariana airline has only one functioning plane, Afghan-based reporters said.

Saudi officials have said pilgrims coming from abroad must arrive by Sunday to be able to perform haj, one of Islam's five pillars.

Inal nilahi wanilahi wur rajaoon (prayer for the dead in Islam).

This news is indeed shocking. May Allah SWT provide peace and stability to his family, relatives and friends.

I had high hopes from him...

Cfalk - people like that weren't exactly trying to get into Australia in the first place. Its absurd, patently stupid - and racist - to assume that the Afghans living in Australia currently (and there are a fair share) and those poor sobs trying to escape the Taliban are a bunch of homicidal maniacs.

Gosh, some dimwits never give their racist, ignorant attitudes a rest, even in the wake of some poor SODs untimely slaughter.

I heard that the minister was beaten because he wanted to go to India with his family on board this plane. and that was a really bad decision at the time where these people were urging to reach Mecca at time, and afghans are people of war what do you expect from them?

How could you post such racist post on the forum ?

Good thing Canadians are generally calm because David Collonette would have been killed a long time ago!

There are reports that the minister was assisignated now, not lynched by the mob as initially reported.

AAK was right from what is said on Al-Jazeera (who originally reported the story) here from my country Qatar. The aircraft was supposed to leave 4 days ago and in the last minute the Transport Minister shows up with his family wanting to go to India on private matters. The Afghan pilgrims waiting in the Terminal were told to stay and that there aircraft will depart soon to Jeddah soon. There is such crowding in the terminal that 4 people died while waiting for the aircraft. They have to arrive in Saudi Arabia before sunday or they will not be accepted in. And because of the Quota system they might not be able to go to Hajj again. They were frustrated and so killed the minister.

I in no way support this murder, but i have to say the minister was wrong in what he did if the reports are true

Shocking, but this is what makes many of us Muslims hypocrites, the Pilgrims could have sacrificed their visit to Makkah, God would definitely have accepted their intention and desire of performing Hajj, even if they ahd not been able to make it, and on the other hand the Minister could have offerd his plane to fly the Pilgrims instead, but the sad truth is neither of the two parties acted according to Islamic teaching's thus bringing a bad image of Muslims once again.

As for Ariana they cannot fly the Pilgrims with their single 727, they also now fly scheduled flights daily to Sharjah so the plane is needed for that as well as its Dehli service not to mention official duty and charters, then again maybe the airline should have sacrificed picking up routes till Hajj was over, but then again making money was more important for them even if theyre flying half empty, the govt. cash strapped as it is has promised to lease planes from abroad for the Hajj operation but they havent arrived, thats why the agitated Pilgrims attacked the Minister, Saudi Arabia has said anyone who wants to perform Hajj should be in the country latest by Sunday.

Normally Saudi Arabian Airlines should have contributed towards the transport of the Pilgrims just as they do from every country they serve, a few charters would'nt have effected their operations in any way especially with the A300 which is now mostly used on domestic routes, but maybe they wouldnt have made money out of it. Malaysia airlines have planes sitting idle in an Australian desert, PIA have two 747s parked idle at Karachi, loads of spare aircrfat from all over the world could have been leased/chartered by a philanthropist or a king or OIC(Organisation of Islamic Countries) to fly the Pilgrims but no, So Basically its all hypocricy, therefore what we Muslims are having to endure Angry

By the way only around 7000 people are performing Hajj from Afghanistan this year, so it was no big deal to transport them.

From the Washington Post, Feb 15, 2002

KABUL, Afghanistan –– Interim leader Hamid Karzai said Friday that several high government officials motivated by a blood feud were responsible for the killing of the country's aviation minister. He called for their arrests.

At least two of the officials are generals, and others are members of the intelligence service and the justice ministry, said Karzai's information minister, Abdul Rahim Makhdoom. Three had left for Saudi Arabia, he said.

The aviation and tourism minister, Abdul Rahman, was killed Thursday in what appeared to be a mob attack on his plane at Kabul's airport by pilgrims angry that they had been unable to travel to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Witnesses at the airport said Rahman was killed by pilgrims.

Karzai, however, said the attack "has nothing to do with hajjis" or those making the pilgrimage.

"He was killed by people who planned it," Karzai told reporters at a hastily called news conference. "We are asking the Saudis to arrest them and bring them back. ... We will try them. We will put them behind bars."

Before Karzai spoke, Makhdoom gave journalists five names of men he said were wanted in connection with the attack on aviation minister Abdul Rahman. Three of the five were believed to have left on flights for Saudi Arabia along with pilgrims traveling there, the information minister said.

The wanted men include Gen. Abdullah Jan Tawhidi, in charge of Afghanistan's intelligence service department, and Gen. Kalandar Beg, a deputy in the defense ministry.

Karzai suggested that the killing was linked to a blood feud dating back to the struggle against the Taliban. All the five he named were part of a faction of the northern alliance with which Rahman had broken.

"All this ... goes back to the days of the resistance," Karzai said, without giving any details. "We are trying to do justice."
