Opinions On The 747

Fri Feb 15, 2002 11:22 pm

Kind of a spin off on the topic "Opinions on the 757"

I've never flown on a 747 but i've seen and heard one takeoff and land at O'hare and it was the most exilerating (probly spelled that wrong) experiance ive ever gotten from a plane. Even a fighter jet does'nt compare.

I guess I like it most in United colors. It brings out it's majestic look.

Also how do you think it compares to other planes you've been on.

Thanks for your posts

RE: Opinions On The 747

747 in my opinion is the ONLY way to travel longhaul. It is the only aircraft that truly feels huge, the upper deck really attributes to that, and gives it so much more character than its long haul counterparts. The 777-300 or A340-600 are no where near it in terms of excitement when boarding.

I can't wait for the A380 also, but the B747 will still be queen (B747-400!).

Hell ya.

I completely agree with you.

I still dont think that the a380 will compare to the 747.

From a distance it will probly look like an a 340.

The 747 has its own disinct look that you can even tell its a 747 from on the ground when its at 40 thousand feet.

Personaly though i dont really think that the a380 will be as successful as the 747.

I really dont like airbus but the a 380's sise makes up for that and that is why ill like it.

I still wont like it as much as the 747 though.

I would love to see a strech 747.

Would that be the longest plane if they do that. I know the longes 777 is as long as the current 747

I also know the a 340 is the longest right now.

I've loaded many 747's years ago and flown on a 747 only once. It is the 'QUEEN OF THE SKIES'. I don't think that there has been or will be an a/c built that has made such an impact on air travel like the 747 has. The 'QUEEN' revolutionized air travel, especially international travel like no other a/c. The newer, technologically advanced a/c being built today owe their existance to the 747.The A380 in my opinion, is more of a gimmick than a trend setter.

I flew on a 400 and a 200 on a trip in the mid-90s, and I will second what the others have said. The 747 is the only way to go. I love the 767 and the 777, but there is nothing like traveling on a 747.

As for the A380, I think it is overhyped. I completely agree with the above posts on it.

In my carreer had the opportunity to work on both the 747 and the "bus". Without any doubt, the 747 is as described here, the "Queen of the skies". And the bus is just that a bus.

I think 777 is more comfortable to tavel on than 747. 747 is a great plane (I´ve flown on it three times), but 777 is the king (especially with GE90´s).

As the CEO of Airbus said of the 747 (and he is a fan btw), "The Queen of the Skies? Absolutely. But by 2006 (A380 first flight), only the Queen of England will be older."

I agree that B747 is such a marvel. I have flown 7 times on a B747 (-100, -200 and -300 series), and its size never stops to amaze me, and the fact that it can take off while weighing about 400 tonnes.

I am not huge fan of Airbus but I do like quite a bit the A330. It is very beautiful aircraft unlike the A340. The A330 seems very proud to me.

The 747 is absolutely the best aircraft ever made. The 777 and A340 just cannot compare to it. Also, I agree about the A380 being over-hyped.

Even though i have only been on it once {AN826 BNE-SYD 08JAN97 B743} the 747 was a marvel. Sitting at gate 80 at BNE i'ntl the plane did look big, however you really got an idea of the size when, in arrival to syd, we waited for a very long time to disembark- my family was in the 3rd cabin, and waited for the rest of the pax to get off first- my goodness I didn't realise so many people can fit in a plane. I was absolutely gobsmacked...  Wow!

I've only flown on the 747 once and someone said to me 'when you're at one end of the aircraft you can't see the other end' and I thought mmm.. but it was so true!

I haven't been on the 777 or A340 to compare.. but it was awesome.

The 747 is an excellent airplane. The only long-hauler I'd choose over it is the 767, but there is always this special feeling I get when boarding a 747 that you don't get when getting on a 767, A330, or DC-10 (which are all excellent airplanes). The cabin is so incredible huge its amazing, and the unique look it gets from the bubble is not matched by anything else! Watching one bank is also an incredible sight!  Love

Give Airbus and Ilyushin credit for designing a modern four engine jet. The 747 has been around for 33 years and only has been modified/revised.

I agree with all the other posts above. The B747 is absolutely wonderful. The fastest subsonic jet around, it's size never fails to amaze people. I agree that the B777 is more comfortable than the B747 but there is a feeling I always had onboard a B747 that I never felt on any other aircraft. It's weight and gracefulness can even be felt when flying in them. Long live the B747 and the "Queen of the skies" rulesz!

No way Pedro's!!! I've flown 747's and i like it, the 747 may be the queen of the skies and the trend setter, but nothing compares to a tripple 7 when it comes to appearance, style and sheer grace. Its much more advanced and qieter than a 744 with GE's IMO.

Just look at the picture and you'll see what i mean

Appearance, style, and grace are your opinions, that's fine. But when you say the 777 is much more advanced and quieter, wrong. The 777 first flew in 1994 while the 747-400 first flew in 1988. There's not a huge difference in years, and they both have very modern technology in them. I've been on both numorous times and the 777 may be a little more quiet, but still not a big difference.

Also, the 744ERs that are coming have the new 777 style interior.

The 777 edges the 747. 777 is FBW which means it's more technologically advanced.

More technologically advanced doesn't mean everything. The B747 and B777 each has their own merits but there are some things the B777 can't compare with the B747.

I agree with Mr.Ba, technology doesn't say it all. The 777 is more technologically advanced, but the 744 is still a very very modern plane, and now even more modern with the 744ER coming.

There are many things a 777 cannot do that a 747 can, they are very different aircraft who don't compete with eachother. So I don't see why we compare these aircraft so much, why not compare the 777 with the other planes in it's class, such as the A340 or MD-11???

747 will stay as the Queen of the sky, that means 380 will be the King!!  Smile Isn't it fair? Because 380 will look a little fat, it would be better to call a slimmer one queen.

BTW, why nobody argues about 777 FBW while Airbus hears so many censures?

I have never seen an aircraft as beautiful as the 747-400. I've flown on it numerous times, the most memorable was in Virgin's premium economy from LAX-LHR...up in the "Bubble" Big grin
I think the A380 looks like a Beluga with windows, quite ugly...
However, one Airbus i doooo like  Laugh out loud is this guy:

747 The Fastest?

Mon Feb 18, 2002 2:16 am

I love the 747 and wish I'd had the chance to fly it, but my L1011 would smoke any subsonic airliner. It was quite happy at .86 and I've seen .90 for awhile. Used quite a bit of fuel above .86, though...TC
