routing EWR SFO over western Mass

not only western Mass but almost entirely north of Lake Superior. Does UA complain to ATC about this? Is it typical? I'm assuming thousands if not tens of thousands extra fuel and other operating costs are involved here?

Not sure the reason but Virgin America's EWR-SFO took almost the same route.

If you check, most other flights between NYC and SFO are doing the same thing. I would imagine winds make that the most efficient route, thus saving the airlines time and money despite a longer distance.

Almost all the traffic did the same route at the time >> b6915 , AA177 and many others ... Why? weather is my guess, but surely there is a reason

I checked and several others did take that route but some others went direct west. https://flightaware.com/live/findflight ... ation=KSFO

Very strong winds directly on the path to SFO, and a lot of storms in the middle of the country to the south. Up and around to the north was the safest, fastest option.

Jesus look at those flight times. 7+ hours NYC-SFO. Kill me now.

Nah, winds can be a friend or a foe any time of year.

What's the problem with more time in the air? As an aviation enthusiast I see it as a bonus. The longer the flight, the happier I am. Circling in a holding for example always puts a smile on my face.

Correct.

I flew the same routing just a couple weeks ago on JFK-SFO. Winds and weather necessitated the move north to get out of headwinds and avoid storms. Canadian ATC wasn't willing to help shorten the route either. But in the end the flight time wasn't too far off normal.

the BOS SFO flights departing on this routing yesterday actually had a shorter flight time, amazing. PHL and IAD had 7 hour flights as well but their routings were typical and went straight into the teeth of the winds.

That looks like CAN CHICA WEST Atc routing due to weather. It was probably required due to wx over central US yesterday

As someone who travels for a living, every extra minute in a plane is one less at my destination, be it wrapping up work quicker or being with my family. I love aircraft as much as anyone, but (especially in coach), I don't need to spend 7 hours crossing the continental US. I have better things to do.

Indeed. I believe they were running that for a while yesterday.

Thanks. That's quite understandable. I travel for pleasure only, so that makes for a difference.

Departure routes out of NYC were affected by weather on Friday 5/19. When departure fixes are heavily restricted, airlines/ATC usually opt to reroute out fixes/sectors without weather/in-trail restrictions. This was the case last Friday.
