One of those routes that ya kinda already thought was served. :spin:

...oh well, good for them.

No LCCs in the market means it might just work for them.

They used to have a codeshare on this route with China Airlines, who flew FCO-DEL-TPE on A330. Last year CI went direct FCO-TPE on A350. That's why it is starting...

As per new Alitalia's CCO (former EK's Italy Country Manager), the Italian carrier is ready to launch Rome-Johannesburg (JNB) next summer.
Further details in the near future

They may have served it in the past. I think they had a codeshare with CI on FCO-DEL (went on to TPE) when it was served until earlier this year.

One might think they are not in the middle of insolvency, or whatever it is that they are in. Didn´t AB announce new routes just moments before it really got ugly too?

They did fly on this route many years ago, with a 767, then a 777 before pulling out.

As for DEL-FCO itself, it is served 5 x weekly by AI using a 787.

On FCO-DEL they would be competing against AI's 4 weekly B788 operated service.

FCO-JNB will bleed heavily for them if launched.

Yes they did. A number of them. I guess you have to have something to do until your fate is decided.

I really hope AZ survives. It has always represented Italy, for better or for worse, in so many places around the world and has always tried to maintain a sense of style. I do realize, however, that their business model no longer fits with what Europeans want: cheap, on-time and cheap.

This is kind of like what Air Berlin did. They launched new international routes from DUS and TXL and made it an focus, despite the fact that all of the newer routes (BOS, MCO, SFO, HAV) got cut along with all of the other ones. Now all of them are gone. So Alitalia is in a crisis and there launching new routes? I don't think that's the right thing to do at this point, sort out all of the issues first.

Yes, AB announced DUS-ORD and I think a Toronto route as well, a few weeks before it filed for insolvency.

This is nuts. Book at your own risk. Or, the Italian government could just ignore the EU and keep it afloat. I think they should, Alitalia is too iconic to fail; just like Barnum and Bailey...oops!
Keep on truckin'...

They also ordered 2 A330-900s, similar to AZ with the 777-300ER. IMO AZ will have to stick around, in one form or another, as it's the flag carrier of Italy and is still relevant now, and couldn't be easily replaced by a new Italian carrier. Anyways, back to FCO-DEL. Seems like a slam dunk! I'm not too familiar with demand from FCO, but I can't imagine that a A332 couldn't be filled on the route, and it'd probably be a kick in the teeth to the ME3.
