Longest Icelandair Route

Wed Jun 14, 2017 7:31 pm

Out of curiosity, what is the longest route that FI does from KEF?

Has WOW prevented FI to expand to places like SFO and LAX?

One of their Cargo 757 TF-FIH has flown KEF-SFO and back nonstop recently.

KEF-TPA
KEF-DEN
KEF-YVR

Although I stand to be corrected

According to my math. KEFANC approx 3300, KEFSEA 3600, KEFPDX 3700

FI has 763's now. They fly those only to JFK on this side of the pond I believe. They could conceivably add more if the want to go head-to-head with WOW, but they don't need to match them in every city. FI has a very faithful passenger base.

Looks like the right order, except KEF-MCO should take the fifth spot from YVR. Florida routes are a. It longer than YVR/ANC.

Interesting, didn't know that about KEF-PDX.

Done that flight a couple times now, goes by quickly and painlessly (the connection madness at KEF is not as sublime...)
They're not handing trophies out today

Interesting comment. I am considering doing YVR-KEF-HEL, as it seems like the most convenient way to connect to Finland, and the entire trip time including stopover is relatively short. But I would be interested to hear more about how well the connections at KEF are organized.

Having flown Icelandair twice, I can't say there is anything particularly remarkable about the experience. KEF is modern but arguably too small. The only downside I noticed was a lack of places to sit and so on. No real operational pitfalls, though I might be cautious about booking a short connection. I'd take it over most of the British airports I frequent, to be honest.

If only they could find a way for all those fish in the hold to add some thrust!

They fly 767s 5 times a week to IAD on the second evening flight.
We have 9 weekly 757s and 5 weekly 767 from KEF at IAD.

As a Portlander, I find it fascinating that KEF-PDX is the longest flight in the FI network. Pretty cool! We are lucky to have Icelandair here in PDX. I hope the route sticks around.

Thanks for the update. The 788 would be a excellent aircraft for FI. The only drawback for destinations on the periphery is that many have to RON 20+ hours to connect to the bank of flights to Europe, but it could be worked out.

Not according to Great circle mapper:
KEF - MCO = 3,071 nm / 3,534 mi
KEF - YVR = 3,080 nm / 3,544 mi

MSP sees a 767 every day from KEF. Seasonal - some time in the fall it will go back to a 757, but this flight is now year-round.

I think they also serve IAD, BOS, ORD, MSP and SEA

Thanks for that correction -- misread the order on GC Mapper I suspect. Fascinating how TPA, DEN, YVR, and MCO are very similar distances from KEF.

They did fly KEF - SFO a while back with, IIRC...a leased 763...but that didn't last long. Would have been longer than to PDX.

It most definitely will, from my sources the route has exceeded expectations and even added a weekly frequency this summer. :)
Nothing compares to taking off in an empty 757 with full thrust!

Given how WOW has announced KEF-TLV, I'm surprised that Icelandair doesn't attempt KEF-TLV by itself (Icelandair has flown JFK-TLV on behalf of Israir).

Affirmative regarding the 767 @ BOS.

Humm, there's no such thing as a faithful passenger base when you're in the low fare business. Everyone I know that has flown FI (including my own family), has done it for one reason and one reason only: the fare was cheaper than everyone else's.

Im not sure the market is big enough for 2 carriers but who knows. First we need to see if WOW would be successful on the route.

WOW and Icelandair do not go exactly head to head on all routes to North America either.

Interesting...it seems like IAD and MSP are good markets for FI.
