When a production line becomes all freighters, it's not normally that long before then end comes for the entire line!!

I don't know where you got that, but NWA doesn't operate any 744 frieghters. They are all passenger.

Hkgspotter1,

Boeing will probably mostly sell freighter versions of the 744 from now on !!

Now, don't get too excited just yet !!

I believe that Boeing has stated several times they plan to make completely new versions of the 747 when they feel the time is right !!

The 747 has a long future ahead, in fact, new 744ERs haven't even come off the line !!

!! !! !! !! !!

Zeus01 - would you mind pointing out, in the list, a NW 744F? I can only find NW 744's (1297, 1303) but not any freighter.

That is correct D-AIGW. I never said they are freighters.

As for the `ER' 744's, well how many have they sold ??. I think its 8 in total. 5 for AF and 3 for QF.

Yeah very true. When the line comes down mainly to Fs, it will end after that.. although I don't hope so.  Sad

Have no fear. The 747 program is not going to end anytime soon. Traveller volume is going to continue to grow over the next 25- 30 years. Boeing cannot cram seats into the 777 like it can on the 747. Also, the 747 is really great when it comes to crossing oceans. This plane is not headed towards retirement. Just wait till boeing launches a avionics upgrade program - those orders will pick right up.
And oh yeah... not having a global recession also helps

I wonder if there is a possibility of B744 orders going up even if passenger loads keep increasing for the next few years... It seems that the B777-300ER will repalce them sooner or later!

By the way, about the CZ B744F, when is it due to CZ and where will it be flying to?

See ya

5Y is Atlas Air.

I think Boeing might keep the 747 line going even if orders drop even more. The 747 is their 'flagship' plane, so just for prestige, they'll keep it.

Has anyone thought the glut of airplanes now on the ground not working? Why would the airlines want to order more?

I think what we are seeing here is several things. First off, yes the 747-400 line is slowly coming to an end. The freighter aircraft are still extremely attractive though which is why you see more of them coming down the line. Again though, over time the 747-400ERF will begin to garner these orders.

The reason pax 747-400 orders are drying up is because the 747-400ER is now the new kid on the block and the "First of a Family" of 747s. Companies are holding their orders for 747s until Boeing unveils where it is truly going with the program. The 747-400ER is a line filler until the next workhorse family of 747s is launched. When the economy begins to pick back up, you will see progress. Until then, Boeing is just as happy producing 747-400Fs as 747-400s.

Maybe airlines want to see how the B744ER works with QF and might decide to buy some one day when the pax load increases... I am hoping for this to happen!

So if the 744 line shuts down in the near future, wouldn't the a340 line be in jeopardy too?

I think the question will be decided when the jury´s coming back in on the A380 real-world bottom line performance. If it´s no good or unimpressive, the 747 might have yet another chance. If it´s superb, the 747 would be in trouble.

I doubt it. It´s just been completely overhauled with the -500 and -600 - basically A340NG versions. If anything, it will inherit a part of the 747´s piece of the pie (together with the 777 and the 380). And I don´t think that piece will just go away...  Wink/being sarcastic

Missing An Important Point!

Fri Feb 22, 2002 1:11 am

I think that we are missing many points here. First off, the A380 is still in its infancy more of a paper airplane than actual metal etc. The 747 isn't dead, it isn't dieing its just doing what it does. Rolling down the line at Everett and going to customers. Boeing has already stated that they will be producing 747s for 30 more years. Here we sit wondering what the future holds for a proven aircraft that continues to dominate the long haul sector like nobodies business, while the A340-500/600 "revamped" line can't get an order to save its life. Airbus is trying to dump Swiss Air's with SAA, heck Airbus has actually loaned money to Virgin so that Virgin can pay for them. It is a slow time in commercial aviation so lets just see how these things play out.

I think :

Passenger operation were hit bad by 9-11. Lots of passenger aircraft were cancelled. Cargo operations proved less vunarable ; aircraft were not cancelled.

Some carriers are going for higher frequency's and more point to point traffic where 747's are too big A330/40's & 767/777's are ordered instead.

cheers
