Air India...

Tue Feb 19, 2002 10:27 am

hi are there any updates as to whats going on with Air India, with regards to its 'privatisation' efforts, and fleet 'renewal' plan, if any still exist. The last i heard was the TATA group had gone cold towards the deal. I think with PIA looking for 'new' planes, there might be some rivalry going on, and air india may soon announce something withe regards to the fleet. I also read that they were considering the A340/777. They have a very similar fleet to PK with aircraft around the same age (which is OLD). Is there any news of them reintroduing new routes to the UK, like MAN which they once flew to, and also BHX? It would be nice to see some A310's at BHX, i dont think the UK has had any Air India A310's in a long time. It would also be nice to see a direct service to canada, is this is possible, maybe with aircraft like the new A345 it may be.
With the aviation industry returning to what it was like pre 9/11, it would be good to see air india add some routes. Also with the major manufacturers like boeing and airbus desperate to sell planes, they could get a good deal on new planes. Many other airlines are taking full advantage of the opportunity.
It is a great shame i think, seeing air india struggle in the way it is right now. With as many rights that they have to fly to so many destinations they could be a massive airline, and the perfect gate to the far east/australia from both europe and the east coast of north america.
I would really like to see air india do well, they were once a very good airline repected by many.
Do you think they might order the A380, i know they could definately use this aircraft on their LHR route and possible their JFK/YYZ route. The perfect Air India fleet i think would be a mix of A380's for thei high density long range routes, and A346/773 for their long range routes. And A332 for their medium haul routes. And some A320's/757's for their domestic routes. I think the A320 family would be a better option for the domestic routes, although the 737NG is a good family of aircraft as well, used succesfully by jet airways and sahara. They could do with some smaller aircraft for domestic as well, some turboprops like jet airways for point to point services from non hub cities or small hub cities like calcuta, chennai, e.t.c.
Im not too sure about IA, and their relationship with air india, can anyone explain. they r both government owned i think. wouldnt it be better for them to form 1 major airline and compete with the likes of jet airways e.t.c.
I hope one day, Air India can live up to their name as.... ' The Palace In The Skies', and become a leading player in the airline industry.

Well, the new Aviation minister was talking about buying 6 777s/A340s, although with India, you can never tell.

AI were supposed to have announced something last week. A few new aircraft is great but I don't think a buying spree on the order you are contemplating will happen. Dry leases of more A300/A310 aircraft is something AI should pursue.
