Smallest Aircraft At Heathrow

Wed Feb 20, 2002 2:37 am

I just wanna know what is the smallest regular aircraft at Heathrow? Is it profitable for the airlines to fly there with such small airplanes ? Or is it only a big airport ?!

KLM flies F50´s from RTM - or at least used to

LH-cityline flies CRJ from CGN

SK does the occasional 737-600

smaller than that I don't know of the top of my head.
'
One could ague that the use of a small AC is a waste of of a scarce slot - but on the other hand is does open up for frequencies to smaller airports

Luxair have an EMB-145 into LHR.

Manx have a 146 to IOM

BE / AF have 146's to TLS and LYS, which are infrequently replaced by the Dash-8's.

KRP, KLM still flies F50's into LHR from RTM. Moreover KLMexel flies ATR42's or 72's into LHR from EIN. As far as I know KLM is the only airline with scheduled commuter planes into LHR.

I saw a Jersey European (now British European) BAe 146-200 at LHR when I was there.

F50 is probably the smallest regularly tasked airline aircraft. Visits by B Ae125 and Learjets to LHR are not uncommon, though private jet traffic is seriously discouraged.#

I have had the pleasure of using a Shorts 360 from LHR, when BRS was closed by weather.

Air France, and British Airways operate a lot of Avro RJ100's. I was there this Saturday, and a few took off just after the BA Concorde!

And occassionally, Manx will operate the ATP (apart from the usual Bae146) to LHR. KLM with its Fokker 50s and ATRs probably has the smallest regular planes. Crossair and Luxair with ERJs follow...

Two years ago, there was the Ghostrider.... What actually happened to it, and where was it flying to / fro? Always a pleasure to see it at T4, amongst the giants Big grin

Certainly the Fokker 50 of the KLM family, I have seen it myself. Adria of Slovenia also uses the CRJ into LHR on occasion - I have pics of that one.

LHR reminds me of DXB. We hardly get any small prop planes here in DXB!

Migman - bmi do not operate LHR-EMA anymore, although they did operate it as a 'slot saver' for a very short time a couple of years ago with a Saab 340:

It was, however, a regular route many years before that - using Shorts 330 & 360 aircraft (I bet you didn't know they operated the Shorts 330 - I certainly didn't!)

Could the Shorts 330 be the smallest a/c to operate into LHR on scheduled services in the last 20 years? ...or does someone know differently?

hmmmm..........bmi's LHR-LBA route is scheduled for the 737-300/500, with occasional A320 & Fokker 100s.

I don't think the aircraft you saw was doing the LBA route.

It could well have been the LHR-EMA route when they operated it a couple of years ago - I once saw a complaint letter at about that time from a pax who was travelling on a Beechcraft instead of the rostered Saab 340 (but I can't remember the route). The passenger was not only complaining about BM sub-chartering this aircraft as a replacement, but more so that it didn't have a toilet, and the man seated behind his family had to use an empty water bottle to relieve himself!

This is actually true - a copy of the letter was posted 'Diamond Views' - the British Midland staff magazine at that time.

Can't argue with any of the replies as far as scheduled stuff goes but I can better it for non-scheduled stuff.

I've known the airline i work for (AAG) take an SW4 Metroliner into LHR on Medi-vac flights to/from EXT, BRS, FZO and various other places. We've also send our Cessna F406 Caravan aircraft in there too. The most unlikely one was probably about 12 months ago when for reasons i cannot say on here (due to someone getting the sack for their mistake), we had to send a Cessna 402 in!!!
Did anyone see it then?

Non airline of course, but I remember a Spitfire visiting LHR in the late 1980's!

Back in the early 70s an Islander was used to run an LHR to LGW shuttle. It was replaced by an Sikorski S61 helicopter!
