Impact Of Cathay's 747s With New Winglets?

Wed Feb 20, 2002 4:43 am

What would the impact be to the rest of Cathay Pacific's fleet and future fleet planning if as some on the forum have said the 747-400s are to receive new winglets? This would mean that the aircraft would not be retiring, and therefore, no new aircraft would be needed to take their place. How would the A340-600 fair or the A380?

Heard it's just rumours... but I do hope to see the new winglets... I think it can save up to 7% more fuel than the current 2% winglet?

B-HOX would be the first to get the new winglets.

New winglets? I haven't heard of this. I know the upcoming version of the 747 is supposed to have winglets something like the 767-400, but I haven't heard of any retrofitting program, certainly not this soon. You have a source?

Well, maybe not in the classic sense, but they are not the usual wingtips.

I'd be very interested in seeing a picture of a 747 with the 737NG-style blended winglets. Took a quick look at the photo database and this is what I found. It's a picture of a 747 that was apparently used to test the new winglets. Unfortunately, the aircraft wasn't wearing them at the time this photo was taken.

Let me clear some things up.

The blended winglet kit will only be for the 747-200B and the -200F.
It will not available for the 747-400 or -400F. The wingtip mounting on the -400 is totaly diffrent from the -200.

The 747-400ER and -400ERF will have Raked Winglets like the 767-400.
(This is not 100% fact yet, Boeing is windtunnel testing both)

I saw a picture of the 747 with the winglets, but it was in the Airways magazine, I will try to find the year and the month for those who have that magazine, and i will post it later.

I am also of the understanding that Aviation Partners blended winglets were only produced for 747-200s. BUT, there has been reports from within CX that B-HOX is heading to Xiamen for some "special" work which may be in the form of new winglets!

Everything I've heard or seen from Boeing indicates 747-400ER, and -400ERF winglets identical to those on 747-400s today. The other 747-X varients were supposed to feature much taller, leaner winglets, similar to those on 737-800s, but I haven't heard of any indication of these being used on the ER models.

The rumour about B-HOX is probably talking about new scheme rather than the winglets. But it seems there is no one can be sure about this.

If they can fit Gulfstreams, 747-200's and 737's I think they can fit a 744. If CX said they will put them on all the 744's it will be big bucks for Aviation Partners.
