Canadian Start-Up Airlines

Wed Feb 20, 2002 8:19 am

I read in a recent newspaper article that there is a a number of Canadian start-up airlines that are trying to take to the skies, about seven of them, maybe more, I forget. Now, I know there is C3 and Royal, also Air Columbus and Canada West, but is there any more? Have you guys heard any news?

There is also that new Regional one using Dash8's and based out of Toronto. I think ex-C3 heads are running that one too.

Why would a domestic carrier be a charter?

Because you are buying a package through a tour operator rather than a flight through an airline. As such, tour operators charter aircraft to provide their services...whether domestic or international.

Well, I can only provide some insight here as far as Canada West goes...

Essentially we'll be seeing a two-757-200 charter operation based out of Vancouver (although there is also a LOT of rumour that they're looking at Edmonton as well). I quote airline President Gordon Andrews, "We're looking to reintroduce service into the travel industry...". Imagine the Southwest Airline's business type modeled into a charter airline. By the end of the year we'll see flights to Mexico. Summers in Europe. They're also looking to add a third 757 for destinations in Hawaii and increased frequency.

I'm on the edge of my seat : )

You also forgot Triton Airlines International. A carrier that was going to be based out of St John's Newfoundland. They had tried and tried to get off the ground many times. I think 4 in total.
