"Dodgy Airlines"

Wed Feb 20, 2002 10:02 am

Forget BA, UA, AA, SQ, EK, DL, LH etc.

But are there any airlines that you would consider "dodgy", which a safety record thats ever been under scrutiny and would rather avoid? Personally there are some asian airlines that i would hesitate to fly on.

Once Biman bought a DC10 (not sure which one) for spares (canibalisation), and no one wanted to insure the plane for it's "delivery flight".

One airline to avoid from experience is AWAir... fuel leak, engine failure and cabin crew fights on ONE flight. You don't need a law againts them, you need a law againts flying them!

I dont like the look of Korean. For some reason i have always percieved them as a "dodgy" airline.
I would hesitate to fly on some other airlines, particularly Chinese ones, or some of the smaller countries in Africa, and just about any airline in Mexico, they dont appear to me to be "safe".

Korean has made big strides in safety after an extensive audit by Delta. However, China Airlines (Taiwan) has a dubious record that didn't improve after the news of the A340 taxiway takeoff.

Mexican Airlines

Wed Feb 20, 2002 11:46 am

Since the demise of TAESA, the remaining airlines of Mexico are very well-regarded.

I have flown Mexicana (several times); and AeroMexico (a lot); and have found both to be well-run and very comfortable. My personal preference is for AeroMexico, for no particular reason.

Looking forward to flying with Azteca at earliest appropriate opportunity!

There are several that I would not fly on for anything. They must, however remain nameless. I have to respect confidentality requests by my host company. None have been mentioned here but one is a fairly new carrier in the US that seems to be highly regarded by several members present. Please don't ask, I can't tell for professional reasons. If anyone has a doubt about safety, look to the FAA for the answers.

They dont get much more racist then some of you guys.

"Personally there are some asian airlines that i would hesitate to fly on"

"I would hesitate to fly on some other airlines, particularly Chinese ones"

What the hell is wrong with Chinese Airlines ??. I've just flown China Eastern and I would do again without a secong thought. What about China Southern ?, Air China ?, Shanghai Airlines ?, China Xinjiang ?.

I keep away from carriers that have stupid pilots and bad service.

Bad pilots: CI, KE, SQ, SU etc
Bad Service: NW, UA, DL etc

I personally have no problem flying any carrier. For those who decide to label an airline unsafe, dodgy or what ever else because of some incidents such as engine failure, fuel leaks etc. These things happen and unless its happening all the time on a large number of flights I would not label the airline dodgy. I have flown on every major US airline and a few smaller ones. I have had an engine fail on 3 different airlines and have been delayed because of fuel leaks on 5 different airlines. I would not call any of those airlines dodgy just because of a few incidents that I experienced on them.

Working for AF at JFK, we did regular handling for Air Afrique's weekly flights to Dakar and Abidjan, and yet every week, I was still amazed at the ability of their Airbus 300-600 to take off with all those bags on board. RK's flights were notorious for their excess bags. Sometimes at the jetways, we would take in excess of 2 or 3 container loads of bags. In all honesty, I would rather take a boat to Africa, than Air Afrique.

My cousin was on a flight in Ethiopia, I hesitate to say Air Ethiopia because I am not sure, and the pilot AND co-pilot locked themselves out of the cockpit and had to break the door down with a hatchet. Thats dodgy.

Let's get some things straight. Chinese airlines have very good safety records due to stringent monitoring by the Chinese government. The same cannot be said about China Airlines, which is Taiwanese and has one of the world's worst safety records. Korean has also been very spotty. Generally, though, airlines from other Asian countries such as Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and so on have good records.

Hop to it, fly for life!

I generally have no reservations flying most carriers, but there are some I would avoid on general principle because of dodgy practices.

For example, I'm still not sure about flying Korean Air, judging by the number of 747s they've managed to fly to Valhalla.

Also not too sure about KLM anymore. My last experience is that they try to extort every single buck they can out of non-full fare paying passengers.

Korean Air are quite dodgy, they managed to fly one of their 747-200F's into a field after just a simple fault a couple of years ago here in the UK! The airline would have to pay ME to fly with them!

HKGSpotter1, you've got quite a bad taste. Dozens of people said that even SU has bad service, it has great pilots who are ex military.
Airlines I would not fly:
China Airlines
Most of the African Carriers
Newer, start up airlines.
Indian Airlines
Ariana (Not for the moment)
Iraqi Airways

I fly SU and KE a lot and find them better all round than virtually all North American airlines with the exception of Delta and South West.

At the end of the day I don't really know what makes a plane (or a car, motorbike, rollercoaster ... ) safe or unsafe. Any of these activities involves risk and unknown variables so doing them is a leap of faith in other people doing their jobs properly which by and large they do.

Labelling Asian or African airlines as being inherently unsafe because they are Asian or African suggests a technical and legal superioirity in other countries which is more fiction than fact.

777-200 : Totally Obnoxious Comment

Wed Feb 20, 2002 9:24 pm

I have only one question to ask you....have you ever flown with Biman ever in your life? I think you should think prior to commenting on an airline before looking down on it! I think the only reason you have commented negatively about Biman is that you are a racist Bas###d. Out of the thousands of people who fly with Biman every year, it is not many but only a handful of passengers who have something negative to say about Biman, and the rest are more often than not pleased with the service provided, keeping in mind the cheap fares Biman offers to its passengers.
I have flown Biman on several sectors, and have almost always been very happy with their service. I am sure there are more passengers out there who will agree with me about Biman and its service.
