Crop Circles

Wed Feb 20, 2002 4:20 pm

Can anyone who has travelled cross country (specifically to the Bay Area) tell me what are those very large circular patches one sees when flying over Utah? Nevada?

Those are irrigation fields. They grow crops in arid conditions, and use a circular water spray arm, with a pivot in the center. The pipe travels on wheels around the pivot, watering the crops, so from the air the field ends up looking circular.

To add to HAL, they are also enormous (huge!) water tanks used for the irrigation. Those may be the smaller circles you see.
