LHR Is NOT The World's Busiest Airport!

Wed Feb 20, 2002 8:05 pm

Today in school I challenged my Geography teacher who is an English that London Heathrow is NOT the world's busiest airport neither was it largest airport.

I told him that :-
1. Atlanta was the world's busiest airport in terms of aircraft movements

2. and Chicago Ohare biggest in terms of passengers.

3. Dallas Fort Worth is the worlds largest in terms of land area.

4. I also said LHR MIGHT be the world's busiest airport in terms of destinations departing there or in terms of number of international airlines flying into it.

5. I further explained that with ATL's four runways and Delta Airlines, USA's third largest airline with fleet over 570 planes , it is not surprising. LHR is busy plus the fact that the slots are limited due to the limited space at the airport. correct?

6. He said that if I am correct then it is because ATL has four runways and LHR has only two. To what I belive, LHR has three runways rite?

7. He said that during peak hours at LHR there are sometimes 700 planes waiting to land. Is that true? I doubt but maybe he meant 700 planes waiting to take off and land?

8. Also, is it correct to say KLIA (KUL) is bigger than Heathrow in terms of built-up area?

Can someone clarify?

Thanks in advance.

Re 7.
700 planes waiting to land. What does your teacher smoke at home? I think that might stretch the hold at Bovingdon to FL650.

But basically it's simple:
LHR has the world's most international passengers.
ATL has the most aicraft movements.
ORD has the most overall passengers.
Don't know about land area, but DFW looked big to me when I went there.
Funny that someone told me Bogota was bigger: I've been in there many times and I can't quite believe that.

As far as I know LHR is the busiest INTERNATIONAL airport in terms of both passengers and aircraft movements. Moreover, BA is the world´s largest airline in terms of international passengers. Plus London as a whole might be the busiest CITY, I´m not postive about that.

And isn´t the airport that covers the largest area somewhere in Saudi? King Khaleed?

P.S.: You know what the busiest airport (passenger numbers) was in September 2001? Tokyo-Haneda!

LHR has 3 runways, but you can only use 2 at the same time in practice:

27R for t/o, 27L for landings or v-v. Normal situation.

23 for landing, 27R for take-off. On horrible weather days.

Montreal Mirabel, at the time of its construction, 1970, was considered the world's largest airport.

see http://www.airodyssey.net/articles/mirabel.html

Based on an internet search, at least three airports claim to be the world's largest.

Denver, DFW and King Kahled (sp?).

Kuala Lampur also lays a claim to the "World's Largest" moniker. See http://www.kisho.co.jp/WorksAndProjects/Works/klia/

A couple of you have it mixed up.

For 2001:
ATL is the busiest in terms of PASSENGERS.
ORD is busiest in the terms of MOVEMENTS.

In 2000, ATL was busiest in both categories.

Check here: http://www.airports.org/traffic/index.html

LHR is busiest in INTERNATIONAL. And, I think, London is busiest when you combine all of London's airports.

I saw some statistics somewhere, that when you left out GA/Executive-traffic, ATL still held the lead on MVT's -- but it was close, though.
Oh well .. we'll see when the official stats show up - most likely in the fall sometime .. FAA aren't really effective with the stats ...

From what I know, Jeddah airport has the largest terminal to handle hajj flights whereas Mirabel has the largest land area.

Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), KUL have a land area of 100 square kilometers or 38.6 square miles. Don't know how it compared to some airport in the Middle East, but it's sure very big!

There are quite a few people here that need to be prefacing their statements with "I think" or "I believe".

2001 most passengers : Atlanta Hartsfield ATL
2001 most total aircraft movements : Chicago O'Hare ORD
2001 most cargo tonnage: Memphis International MEM

First off, no, even if you did not count general aviation or military ops ATL would have still come up 16,221 ops short of ORD.

Secondly, Los Angeles International LAX, Van Nuys VNY and John Wayne Orange County SNA - the three busiest airports in LA - had 1,580,447 ops last year. Therefore it is mathematically impossible for London's three busiest to have more since their busiest, Heathrow, had four hundred and fifty some thousand; and that is without throwing in Long Beach's LGB's 358,508 to the LA total.

Heathrow is the busiest non-American airport and it ranks 15th or 16th in the world. Your Heathrow's and Charles de Gaulle's of the world do fairly well in the passenger number department, but when discussing shear numbers of aircraft nobody comes close to the larger American airports. It's simple, most of the larger American airports have 737's and the like serving 200 domestic destinations with great frequency and wide bodies serving a hundred or so international destinations, whereas LHR, CDG, NRT, etc... have 747's and such serving 200 international destinations and smaller planes serving 30 to 50 nearby airports.
I'm not joking! This is my job!

I know for sure that FRA is landwise the smallest international airport with only 17 square km or maybe I should say the smallest major airport.

London is indeed the busiest city passenger-wise:

(2000 figures in millions)
LHR - 64
LGW - 31.7
STN 11.7
LTN - 6
LCY - 1.6
total - 115

Runners-up are Chicago, Tokyo, Atlanta, Paris, Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Frankfurt, San Francisco.

If you take Microsoft Flight Simulator movements into account, Chicago's Meigs Field is the world's busiest airport.  Big grin

Airbus Lover,

You made some minor errors.

Just recently, Chicago O'hare (ORD) took the lead as the busiest airport in the world in both aircraft and passenger movement. So now Atlanta (ATL) is the 2nd busiest airport in the world in both aircraft and passenger movement.

Another thing, Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW) is not the largest airport in the world.

Riyadh King Fahd International Airport (RUH) is the largest airport in the world, followed by Denver International Airport (DEN), then Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW).

So Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW) is the 3rd largest in the world.

I think for an airport where the majority of traffic is international flights, LHR wins hands down.

This is good reason why the British government ought to seriously look at a site in the Thames Estuary to build a super airport with 6-8 runways capable of simultaneously takeoff/landing operations and 5-6 large terminals so LHR can be phased out.

It may not be the busiest but it is the most interesting with arrivals and departures from all over the world.

There is no other airport with the diversity of types and airlines though other interesting airports that I've visited with a huge range of airlines and types of planes include LAX, ORD, HKG and SYD.

Thanks people for correcting me and giving extra info.

So from here I learned that:

Busiest (pax and a/c): ORD
ATL is the second.

Busiest *international traffic*: LHR
anyone kno which airport is the second?

Largest terminal: Jeddah?
Largest area (is it built up or land?): Riyadh, Denver then DFW.

Is it true that if land area goes and KLIA expands fully, they will be the world's largest airport in land area (i am not sure built up or land) with 5 runways and is able to handle 100 million pax.

Well, since carries the most international passengers behind BA, my guess would be FRA. CDG is an option too, they have recently surpassed FRA as busiest airport on the European mainland. Come to think of it, the bulk of fomestic traffic out of Paris is from ORY, while the FRA domestic traffic naturally is from FRA itself - so CDG probably has more intl pax than FRA.

For one week in July Oshkosh Wisconsin is the busiest airport in the world in terms of movements.

Yes Chicago passed up Atlanta in terms of movements this past year, but with the probs with United we'll wait and see if that changes again.

That airport in Saudi Arabia is so big because of the adjoining military base.

Denver International is 53 Square miles.

Detroit Metro Airport DTW from what I read has a lot of land to the south of it that has been bought by the airport recently. As of now there are still some houses and farms on it, but from what I heard that would put DTW as the second largest in terms of land in the U.S. after Denver, but yes as of now DFW would be the second.

RE: LHR Is NOT The World's Busiest Airport!

There's always lots of confusion about claims that airport have over being the busiest airport. LHR every year calims that they are the busiest INTERNATIONAL airport in the world. This is only partially correct. They do lead the ranking on most pax on international flights, but every airport with at least one international route can claim it's an international airport. Therefore the busiest international airport would then be ATL.

However you can also claim to be the busiest airport in the world in terms of aircraft movements. LHR then goes down the drain and faces at least 15 other airport above them.

Below are the 2000 year results for the top twenty airports in terms of pax, movements and cargo.

Pax [millions]:
1 ATL 80.2
2 ORD 72.2
3 LAX 68.5
4 LHR 64.6

16 DTW 35.5
17 IAH 35.2
18 EWR 34.2
19 MIA 33.6

Movements [x1000]:

Easy maths, would prove you that 700 aircraft waiting to land at LHR is a cause of your teacher smoking some kind of herb or other things.

Heathrwos daily movement average is: (according with the facts given by PW100) 1279. Now, it's impossible that of them, 700 are waiting to land at the same time

Its been debated before.. alot of figures get messed up, there are alot of factors, although one thing for sure is that ATL is biggest in terms of passengers handled (where did the idea that O'hare was come from?)...

Also, Memphis is by far the biggest Cargo Airport  Smile
