FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

WHERE ARE SEATS SHOWN?
They aren't. This only shows departures.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Must be something else with both AA & DL reductions. The Atlantis resort is in Nassau, not Freeport.

FPO has been on a downward spiral for ages. Its akin to "End of Ottoman Empire/"sick man of Europe" point right now.

They just cannot compete with PUJ, CUN and to a lesser extent AUA.

I'm extremely interested to see who steps into these EAS markets. I hope its not ZK. I could easily see SkyWest bidding on EAR much like they just plucked PUB from ZK. The others I see going to Boutique with a combination of PC-12 and Kingairs.

Thanks as always Enilria!

From http://www.hnair.com/adnews/internation ... rnd-r2-0-0 HU will use "B787-800"[sic.] to fly CTU-JFK-CTU.. 788 actually have enough rannge for this?

Looks like AAG has made some headway with (maybe even finalized) their early 2018 (Jan/Feb) skeds. Maybe they'll be ready to announce some of their anticipated/expected new routes/flights for early next year, in the next week or two...

Didn't see this mentioned however there are changes for AA in December at ROC:

ROC-CLT goes from 3 daily to 4 daily. This results in the loss of mainline however going from 2 A319 and 1 CR9 to 4 CR9.

ROC-PHL gets 2 two class jets for the first time in a while with 2 175.

While the loss of mainline isn't good this change means more first class seats with CR9 and 175s having 12 seats versus 8 in a A319. There is also more frequency to CLT.

Well then whoever is subsidizing the FPO flights that come and go. I know for a fact there is a subsidy program for FPO.

Crazy that DL is cutting YQB, a route that has such obscenely high fares on 1-2 hour flights to the US. Why have US carriers been cutting secondary Canadian cities so much?

Is there really that much traffic from the U.S. to Quebec? It's a beautiful city. Probably the most "European" city in North America, but it doesn't seem like it would be a profitable destination.

So DL will be completely out of YQB. Interesting. I wonder if WS will pick up this route, at least seasonally.

Perhaps not coincidentally, there's a CRJ maintenance facility in CKB.

Was YQB served by CR2 mostly? I've been into there in the 9 a handful of times but I wonder if it's a casualty of the NYC upgauge.

Looking at flightstats.com for the new few days, the totality of YQB-NYC service is 1x DL CR2 to JFK, and 2x UA E145 to EWR.

Skywest will serve CKB because they have been chosen as the new carrier for Essential Air Service.

Probably not as much a product of the NYC up-gauge, as much as the loss of CR2 flying in ATL by the L-ASA cuts, needing movement of the 9E 200's to ATL

Perhaps not coincidentally, there's a CRJ maintenance facility in CKB.

Skywest will serve CKB because they have been chosen as the new carrier for Essential Air Service.

I still find it interesting that CKB and MGW are EAS markets. They are both such an easy drive to PIT. However, it is nice to see them both keep service as they are both very quaint little airports. Are there any other EAS markets in the east served by jets?

ROC-CLT goes from 3 daily to 4 daily. This results in the loss of mainline however going from 2 A319 and 1 CR9 to 4 CR9.

ROC-PHL gets 2 two class jets for the first time in a while with 2 175.

While the loss of mainline isn't good this change means more first class seats with CR9 and 175s having 12 seats versus 8 in a A319. There is also more frequency to CLT.

Don't count on the loss of mainline being long term, simply seasonal adjustments. Similar to what UA does in ROC around then. PHL has been planned for a while as far as introducing 2 class.

I'd have to agree the earlier post...it bid the route so that it could sequence airplanes through Bombardier Aircraft Services.

Morgantown settled for Cessna 208s. Clarksburg did not, and ended up with Via Air Brasilias (under AEAS). That was a disaster, so Clarksburg petitioned to exit AEAS and reenter EAS, hence they get Skywest.

Lewisburg (WV) and Shenandoah (VA) are EAS cities which are served with Via Air EMB-145s. Watertown (NY) is served by AA* CRJs.

For a "hub - hub" route, DL is really a bit player with less than 2 daily.

Agreed. This summer, UA is 2x, VX, B6 and DL are all 3x and AA is 5x. A lot of capacity on a re;actively low yielding route. I think DL keeps enough to satisfy corporate contracts.

Holy Cow man, that's something I was unaware of, thanks for taking the time to explain that. Now I need to research this, in 5 years or less we'll be living on the Big Island & I want to know if I can even think of affording a residence where I can take advantage of this service.

Your right about that. I visited Freeport a couple of years ago and I was not impressed. The city itself has seen better days and there is only one major resort on the island. Beautiful beaches though...

Aeromexico has certainly served SLC before, i think it was back in the MD days they have served MEX before Delta did, and i think GDL. Delta serves GDL seasonally if im not mistaken.

It as right after the 733 retirements and there are still plenty of frequencies, it might be easier on the schedulers to cut some of the higher frequency markets short term until they are plane positive again.

Bummer on Delta pulling out of YQB but despite going there from NYC four times per year, the fares they charge never leave it as an option. Much easier to find, when you can, cheaper deals through Montreal, or just fly into Montreal, and as someone noted above, drive, or take the bus. Bus from YUL is easy - picks you up right out front and takes you straight to downtown QC in say 3 - 3 1/2 hours or so. A bus ride isn't my first choice but it's easy and it works. If you get a rental car, the drive is very very easy, and if you have time, taken the beaten path and see some of the beautiful countryside. Good stuff.
if assumptions could fly, airliners.net would be the world's busiest airport

Next summer, only 2x daily EWR will be left. Quite the dowgauge on YQB-NYC. Here's hoping UA picks up the slack and returns to 3 or 4x daily on the route.

Is YUL the issue or is it something else? YQB-YUL is drivable but it's not very much fun.

It just suggests to me that there aren't enough people willing to pay what UA and DL (and AC and WS on the codeshares) want to charge for non-stops. Hey, it's only like 14 hours on ViaRail and Amtrak, right? :)

Don't count on the loss of mainline being long term, simply seasonal adjustments. Similar to what UA does in ROC around then. PHL has been planned for a while as far as introducing 2 class.

That's all good to hear. I work for Envoy part time at ROC. I headed rumors that the former US Airways and now American employees were leaving ROC and the station would go all Envoy. I guess mainline leaving and this rumor are unrelated.

Also, unrelated to this thread, United starts a 4th ROC-ORD flight this week (starts Tuesday I believe). Initially three mainline and one E145. Looks like it lasts through the fall, though the third mainline is downgraded to Express in September.

Seems like Atlantis refused to write a check!

Must be something else with both AA & DL reductions. The Atlantis resort is in Nassau, not Freeport.

Well then whoever is subsidizing the FPO flights that come and go. I know for a fact there is a subsidy program for FPO.

Grand Bahamas Airport Co. has submitted proposals for substantial increases to passenger facility charges and security fees as a means to make up lost revenue. Seemingly a lose-lose situation with effects already being felt.

Perhaps not coincidentally, there's a CRJ maintenance facility in CKB.

Skywest will serve CKB because they have been chosen as the new carrier for Essential Air Service.

Maintenance makes sense as their schedule is weird otherwise. Inbound flight gets to CKB at 1:45pm and then RON returning next morning at 6:10am. So it gets maintenance from 1:45 overnight.

This is no doubt the only reason that UA/OO agreed to this route, regardless of the EAS money.

Actually the 1:45pm arrival from Dulles heads on to O'Hare about 30 minutes later.

CKB departures
6:10am IAD
2:18pm ORD

CKB arrivals
1:48pm IAD
6:38pm ORD

They may of course be doing overnight maintenance work with about 11.5 hours on the ground overnight. But the long overnight is critical so the same crew that brings the bird in one night can take it out the next morning rather than having to rotate crews through CKB.

Skywest has bid on quite a few EAS routes recently which are on the small side -- in addition to CKB they have bid recently for Quincy, Cape Girardeau, Moab, Pueblo and Vernal. There are quite a few recently put up for bid, some of which are routine biannual bids and others due to the current carrier ending early. It will be interesting to see what other market Skywest does and doesn't bid for, and if any other big RJ operators will throw their hats into the ring.

Good question. I think the longest 788 flight into JFK is HY from Tashkent, which isn't nearly as long.

From Routesonline http://www.routesonline.com/news/38/airlineroute/274174/hainan-airlines-plans-chengdu-new-york-launch-in-oct-2017/

HU7915 CTU2200 – 2350JFK 789 26
HU7916 JFK0150 – 0555+1CTU 789 37

but http://www.routesonline.com/news/38/airlineroute/273256/hainan-plans-chongqing-new-york-oct-2017-launch/ seems to be a B788

HU415 CKG2200 – 2350JFK 787 35
HU416 JFK0150 – 0635+1CKG 787 46

I thought PenAir was retaining the PDX-CEC route. Apparently, not.

I'm certainly disappointed that YQB is going away. We were supposed to go there for Valentine's Day 2016. The flights were, at that point, 2x daily on CR7. It turns out that weekend was insanely cold (we're talking -60s with wind chill), and our flights were oversold. They paid us $1200 each to bump, cab vouchers back home to Brooklyn/back the next morning, and food vouchers. In the end, we took the $1200 each, cancelled the trip all together (change fees waived) and sat under the covers at home instead.

Oh, and I found $5 on the floor in the skyclub that night. :-)
