I Guess These Folks Don't Like To Fly...

Thu Feb 21, 2002 6:44 am

Notice how everyone has their windows closed. I don't know about you guys but as an aviation fanatic I never pull down the shade. I am always looking out of the window.

No.

Actually it is not me who pulls down the shade. Very often, when I come pretty late to checkin, I fail to get a window seat so that I find myself cramped on a middle seat... and of course in 99% of these cases the guy at the window either closes the shade or covers it with the huge newspaper he is reading!

I demand that airlines forbid to read newspapers at the window seats!!!  Big grin

Best regards,

Tom

They closed them in the picture because they saw Mike, Brian, Justin and Carlos standing there and couldn't stand the sight of them...
I'd close mine too if I saw them.

Hi,

I love plane but still i closed the shade....One of the funniest things, in business class during a atlantic flight (west or east bound), everbody closes the shade, and it's very quiet....but in the cattle class, c'est le bordel! it's very noisy and lot of light!

That is annoying when a window is wasted...

It could be that they were viewing a movie in the A300 picture above. I saw the film 'JFK' on a flight once...it ran until we completed rollout and movie still was not over.

If they dont want to look out the window I'll be more than happy to switch seats with them! I ALWAYS ask for a window seat, and I NEVER close the shade, even at night.

Hi,

Always close the shade during a night flight....it is dark outside  Wink/being sarcastic

Close the shade during a long flight is a way to be polite for others who would like to sleep!!!

I agree Dragaon-wings. Even if it's at night I never pull down the shade. And EGGD. It annoys the hell out of me too when a good window is wasted like that.

Last time I flew, We took off at sunset, and arrived at dawn. It was the most awesome thing ever!! December 29-30th, and it was a full moon. It reflected off the wing which was so cool, and also it had just snowed in the UK and the water was so calm, so there were reflections on the SEA that were just perfect, almost like it was ice. The moon completely lit up the ocean coming into MAN.

So cool! I love window seats! I would have alot less views on my pictures if I didn't get a window seat last time I flew... Big grin

Well, the approach was too dark to get a photo, the takeoff was a great sunset, but unfortunetely I was on the wrong side of the a/c and the sun was shining into the window which was megadirty. Shame  Sad I have some pictures from the flight on the way out though, but i'm not a one for plugging photos!!!!

There must be something more to it...Shades have to be up for landing and departure here in The States. Either this was some kind of check flight or???

I just looked at the photo, that doesn't look like the shades, more like a converted A300? Or being ferried to JFK after being taken out of service or something...

Sure I use the shades! That's what they're there for. If I'm sleeping or if its at night and I don't want that damn strobe light reflection, I'll close the shade. Or if the sun is coming in really bright-- hurts my eyes and you know how easy it is to get a sunburn at FL330?

As an American Airlines Flight Attendant, I could explain the situation a little bit better. If the picture was taken somewhere in '93. That explains it all. The pilots in unity for our strike in '93 wanted to show management that no pax was flying. This was our pilots way of showing the company how effective our strike was. Mr. Crandall wanted to make it seem like he could run the airline without F/A's. He did but hurt AA dearly, AA is not a cargo carrier, we specialize in flying people. That's how they make money!! If the photo wasn't taken in '93 I don't have any other explaination.

I never close my shades.

On that picture, I don't think that ALL the shades are closed. I think it's the sun's reflection on the fuseage that looks like it, but not. I'm probably wrong. But that's pretty scary.

I would never shut the shades, I love looking out of the window and seeing the clouds or the ground and it's very cool to see. Even when the sun is shining right in my face, I still keep the window open, because you never know, there might be something flying pretty close to you like on my last trip, I saw a TWA MD-80

Hey Vafi88. I was flying JFK-MIA one time and when we reached cruising altitude I saw a Korean Air 744 pass right above us. It was the coolest thing.

N14053- The Korean Airlines pilot was asking your pilot for directions to that tiny runway in Anchorage  Laugh out loud

The sun seems to be very bright on the side of the aircraft... perhaps the FA's asked everyone to close the shades to see the pre-flight safety video better.

On the topic of window shades, I was on an Air Canada a320, in the emergency exit row, and the shade opened from the bottom up (someone from maintenance must have put the window in upside down  Big grin ) and it wouldn't stay shut (not that I cared)

Someday, we'll look back at this, laugh nervously, and then change the subject.

I think the plane is just being flown for maintance or somthing and there are only crew onboard so they decided to close the window. I remember on a class trip once when this kid wanted to window really bad and finally got and seat with the letter a but it was on a 757 and that was the row with no window it was funny.

TWAL1011- are you sure they have to be up for landing and take offs? Because I've been on flights and alot of times some window shades have been left down during both take off and landings..

Well, as said before I never close the shade :

1) When sleeping my eyes are closed, I don't mind any light, you could just put me under a neon lamp and I would be peacefully sleeping  Big grin

2) At night : yes, it is dark outside, but I love to see the reflections of the strobe on the wings, see some cities passing by underneath or some cloud formations which you still cn see when it is not pitch black.

3) I get claustrophobic (sp?) if I am sitting in such a small room like an aircraft cabin and have only the wall/closed shade at the one side, the head of the neighbour or his newspaper at the other side and the seatback of the front row in front of me.... I need a free view to breathe!

4) I doubt that when I am sitting at the window my seat neighbour will be disturbed by the light coming in. When I sit at the aisle or in the middle seat, I usually can't even see the window as such, not to speak from some "disturbing light".Best regards,

Well, I am flying a lot, both private and business and still enjoy every single sector - except when there is no wioutside view....

Thats the one thing I don't like about flying business class- everybody shuts their windows! And then there is a kid named blink182 who wants to keep his window open, but the parents say no because it will disturb people  Smile

I recently used 25,000 precious United miles to upgrade to business class from SIN-NRT-ORD-RIC. Upon settling in my window seat before departure from Singapore at 7:00 AM, I marveled at the legroom and the fact that I had four windows when my seat was reclined. I was in the last row of business in the 747-400. I was looking forward to looking out these windows for the daylight trip to NRT. Almost immediately after takeoff, everyone in business class closed their window shades except me. I had just had a full night's sleep in my hotel, and planned to sleep that night also, so I didn't want to sleep all day. I wasn't tired. And if I slept all day I wouldn't be able to go to sleep that night. I got up to go to the lavatory, and when I returned, all four of my window shades were closed. I don't know who did it. There was nobody sitting in the aisle seat beside me. Was it a flight attendant or a fellow passenger? They had no right to decide that I couldn't enjoy my form of entertainment. I couldn't believe it, and I was furious. So I just sat in the dark for the rest of the flight. Just before we reached NRT, the captain announced that there was a very good view of a volcano on the right-hand side, and up went everybody's windowshades and people on the other side of the plane rushed over to try to see out. When everybody else wanted to see out, they could, but when I wanted to see out, I wasn't allowed to. Never again will I waste my frequent flier miles for business class. I didn't enjoy that flight one bit.

Sorry to hear about your experience. You should have opened the shades right back up when you got back (I know I sure would have!).  Smile

I was told that it's an FAA regulation that all window shades have to be up for takeoff and landing. Of course it was on ATA, what do they know.  Big grin

Anyway, I was there, too. I have a very similar shot, and on mine I can see there are additional windows open over the wing. But all the windows not over the wing are all closed. I thought it was weird the first time I saw it, too. I still do...  Confused
