What's Southwest Up To?

I talked to some Southwest employees today, and they told me that 1,000 of the 4,000 people they are hiring are going to be in Midway. Think they're making a run on United?

Southwest will not go into O'Hare, so they're not making run for United.

Still, midway's quite close. And 4,000 people? there has to be something going on. Buying an airline? Exploding into new stations? Something!

IMHO, you don't have to be at the same airport to crush the competition.

LUV could easily fly to many markets already served by UA and AA from ORD, like Austin, El Paso, San Antonio, Tucson, etc. O&D passengers may easily switch their loyalties if additional schedules come on the market.

Midway had a lot of good people working for it, probably closer in company philosphy to Soutwest than most other airlines, and they flew 737's. I think that is reason enough to go after hiring them.

Perhaps Southwest is trying convince the people of Chicago to fly out of Midway. I have not been to Midway, never seen it, not even sure the location of Midway but if it is a better choice and pricing for the paying public then Southwest will succeed. I hopeb they do for the sake of competition.

I believe ATA has a significant operations at Midway? Perhaps someone knows better could answer.

Southwest is making inroads in many different markets. But I need to ask though, with Southwest expanding there is a finite amount of places that they can fly in the USA as well as city pairs. There must be plans on the board regarding some type of expansion to Canada or Mexico.

Yes ATA has significant operations out of MDW, but still less than Southwest. By in large, ATA has been avioding going head to head against Southwest. From MDW they both compete on flights IND, MCO, PHX, LAS, and FLL. (and soon SEA) ATA flies to a few east coast cites that Southwest has stayed away from for congestion reasons (PHL, LGA, DCA, BOS, EWR) and flies to some smaller markets in Florida. Right now they are expanding, but into international markets. They are about to add Grand Caymon, Aruba, Cancun, and (i think) Guadalahara fom MDW. Many new gates are going to be added and it will be interesting to watch how thinks develop. I would be suprised to find out that Southwest has any plans to international anytime soon. They are not close to reaching that "finite limit of places to fly to". WN receives 100s of requests for service from cities every year. Since they add only one or two markets a year, that gives them a lot of time. They have many markets that they have yet to enter (long haul etc.) and they can always gain more market share in the markets that they already fly in.

Interesting, well I hope that WN keeps up the good work and gives the public an alternative to the overpriced and overhyped service from the big 4.

I believe in the low-fare carriers and hope they thrive in the good and bad times dealing with the economic cycles.

Jetblue must be gaining market share with every passing day in JFK as well as the other low fare carriers.

Southwest is a large carrier, but I did read somewhere that WN will be the largest US carrier within 5 years? Is that correct?
