Selcal?

What does this word mean? Confused I've seen it a few times, but I have no idea of what it means.

SelCal stands for 'Selected Call Code for High Frequency Communications' and is used to contact aircraft individually. Naturally all selcal codes must be unique.

Maybe someone else can enlight as to how exactly it works...

SELCAL is used on HF frequencies to selectively call individual aircraft: makes a ding dong noise when it is you being called up from the ground. There is an individual aircraft code printed in the flight deck, often on the registration pacard.

Thanks for your answers. Does this code follow the a/c throught its entire life, or is it changed somtime? And does this apply to all a/c or only airliners?
