Historical list of UA 747 service

Sat Nov 11, 2017 1:27 am

Over on airline route online they have a feature that lists all the routes United used their 747s on. On the list was one route I never knew they did (Chicago-Rochester, NY!!!). There was also a route I KNOW they did but wasn’t on the list (Boston-SFO).

A great list! I flew a UA 747-122 LAS-LAX and a 747-SP SFO-LAX in the 80's.

I swear there was a thread that posed this very question not too long ago, and people came up with a pretty good and exhaustive list. I couldn't find it when searching for it now, but maybe someone can help dig it up...

Thanks for the link..Didn't fly on the UA 747's much only from SFO-HNL, SFO-LAX and the great upgrade of the century our 727 to ORD was replaced with a 74L after the SF earthquake.

where's the link? I used to live in ROC and it never saw more than a 727 in the 80s/90s, i can't believe it would see regular 747 service.

You’ll see ROC listed, albeit briefly in late 1984-1985. I’m with you: I never recalled it happening either. As for BOS-SFO, it factually WAS operated by a 747 at certain points yet is not on this ‘comprehensive’ list.

Back in the shuttle by united days it was quite common to roll out a 747 for sfo/lax/sfo when Severe weather delays.

Airport Activity Statistics shows no UA 747s at Rochester in 1984. The online 1985 issue at hathitrust.org isn't complete-- anyone got a paper copy?

At one time in the 1970s I remember seeing a 747 scheduled on one of the SFO-LAX flights.

Did UA ever schedule the 747 into ITO, or just the DC-8-61?

Looks like the Chicago-Rochester 747 didn't really happen. The 1/85 Pocket OAG shows a 747 SEA-ORD-ROC or PDX-ORD-ROC -- all 747s to ROC to end after 6 Jan. But can't find any 747s departing ROC-- the alleged arrival was at 2245, so it probably didn't continue east, and it isn't shown returning to Chicago.

There was a 747 operating out of BDL in the mid 70’s as shown in this list. It was eventually replaced with DC-10’s with the BDL-ORD route being operated with them on multiple segments through the day up into the early 90’s. At one point there were at least three daily -10 flights a day with the remainder of the Chicago flights seeing DC-8’s. Though quite often during that time it was not unusual for flights to be upgraded to 747’s around the holidays or during winter weather. Returned once from a Norte Dame football game to BDL right before Thanksgiving and our DC-10 flight was a 747. Went out packed as well.

For me it’s been all -422s starting with LAX-SYD as a kid in the Saul Bass days, and a couple of LHR-SFOs every year in recent years when the early UA900 has been op by 747. Have flown quite a few HKG-SINs on United in recent years but only since it became a 777-222ER (and now terminated approx the same time the 747 was retired), would love to have flown it on a
747. I don’t even like United much but I’ll really miss the UA 747s.

I do remember riding a 744 ORD-DEN sometime in the early 2000s. Even then, pax were *very* appreciative of the rare opportunity to ride the queen of the skies!

ITO had both the 747 and DC10 for several years in the 1970s.

Believe me, I wish I had some - especially since I had the entire upper deck to myself. Unfortunately, this was back in the day when getting "pics" meant dropping them off at Fotomat and picking them up a week later. :)

I remember taking off, eating dinner, dozing off and then waking up over the Salton Sea east of Palm Springs.........and as I'm typing that it just occured to me, it wasn't GRU-SFO, it was GRU-LAX.

I guess I could have really used those pics..... ;)

-JFK-LHR, briefly when UA acquired Pan Am's LHR operation in 1991.
-EWR-LHR was a 747-SP for a short time in the early 1990's post PA acquisition, through 1993 I think.
-JFK-NRT was 747-200B and then 747-400.
-EWR-NRT was 747-200B.
-LAX to SYD, SYD-MEL, MEL-SYD. Wasn't LAX-AKL a 747 route in 1994 before it went to the 772 or is that not right?
-ORD-NRT, ORD-PVG, ORD-PEK, ORD-FRA were all 747 routes on and off for years.

Just a few but oh the memories.

LAX-AKL was a 747 for years was a 772 from June 2002 March 2003 when they pulled out.

Took over from PA using 74L’s and 741’s. was a 744 from 1992/93.

IAD saw more 747s than one would think. Daily IAD-NRT/PEK along with one, occasionally two IAD-LHR/FRA frequencies, mixed in with 767-300ERs. Now they've shifted to all 777-200ERs, with the exception of the morning IAD-LHR. IAD-LAX/SFO occasionally had a 747 substitution. If anyone remembers another IAD 747 flight, please chip in.

I do...
Yep, the good old days of photoprint and the surprise for opening the envelope...
Anyway, an amazing ride you had especially with a full upper deck for yourself.
Never knew UAs 747SP have been to GRU.
Lucky you!

IAD-FRA & IAD-PEK were the last flights to run the scheduled 744s from IAD. They both have since gone to the 772.

I doubt any airline ever had 747 service to ROC. AA did with DC-10-10's in the 70's. AFAIK,the only 747 to ever come here was Air Force 1. The only 747 I ever flew in was July 4,2004 . ORD-LAX N122UA.

Turns out no 747s departed from Rochester in 1984 or 1985, according to Airport Activity Statistics. If somebody has a 12/84 OAG they can probably confirm that the 747 supposedly scheduled into Rochester never departed from there.

Thinking back on it, I wanted to confirm whether UA ever ran a 741 on DEN-LAX as late as 1998/1999, or whether that was a 742.
I remember in the front a spiral staircase, so that’s making me wonder if it was a 741.

UA had daily 747 service in the early '80s from SAN-LAX-HNL-LAX-SAN. Unfortunately, I never made the round trip from SAN to LAX for a day of plane spotting like I always wanted to before the service ended. :(
