UPDATE 1-Boeing offers latest plan for 747 upgrade
(Adds details, quotes, U.S. teleconference)

By Bradley Perrett, European aerospace & defence correspondent

SINGAPORE, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Boeing Co on Tuesday launched its latest attempt to revive flagging sales of the 747 wide-body airliner, offering a new version of the jumbo jet that would fly further and make less noise.

"Based on increasing customer interest, Boeing is developing this new family of 747 airplanes and is now offering them to airline customers," Boeing said in a statement issued at the Singapore air show.

"The 747-400XQLR could enter service in early 2004, depending on customer demand."

Boeing to extend life of its 747 jumbo jet
By Mark Odell

Sales of the current version of the 747 have slowed in recent years as its market was cannibalised by Boeing's own smaller 777 twin jet, and it faced new competition from the larger A380 superjumbo launched by arch-rival Airbus at the end of 2000. Boeing pulled out of the race to build a stretched version of the jumbo jet to compete with the A380 early last year, and has focused instead on improving the performance of the current 416-seater aircraft.
