Turkish Aviation December 2017

Thu Nov 30, 2017 9:02 pm

Hello there Turkish Aviation fans.
You can find last months thread here: viewtopic.php?p=19989555#p19989555

Happy Anniversary !!!!!!
If I am not mistaken this is the 11th anniversary of Turkish Aviation threads, going back all the way to 2006.
Thank you all for years of participating :)
Here is the first Turkish Aviation thread from December 2006: (some really cool posts there)

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=430765&p=5727919&hilit=Turkish+Aviation+January+2006#p5727919

and in there, this post from a.net member Beuacaire:

"Without trying to look smart-assed,I predict that TK will migrate into a high-quality airline in some years.
They are quite good today ( with considerable room to improve ..) , have a young fleet,a huge domestic market and an expansive global strategy.
They should not yield to simple low-cost criteria but rather pull the service-level up -even if the cost of tickets might become a little higher.
Being part of Star is undoubtedly an asset and will help to re-define the hub-strategy.
Ultimately ESB will become a regional hub with more flights to the ME,Europe and Asia.I follow TK since some years in their development strategy and must admit they do the right things !
Don't worry about Turkey becoming or not memer of the EEC -it's not so important for Turkey as some pretend!"

Some other news:
-First TK 77F TC-LJL will join the fleet soon, 2nd TK 77F even might join this month.
-Turkish Airlines reports net profit up 278.8% to company record US$939 million for 3Q 2017, with revenues up 23.1% to $3.6 billion, and cash and cash equivalents at $2.4 billion at period end.
-No new routes announced from TK recently. What can we expect, any rumors?
-When can we expect a firm 787/350 order . What is the average time in between LOI and a firm order?

Couple other gems from 2005:
-Boeing: Turkey will buy 180 planes in 10 yrs.
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=358791&p=4332337&hilit=Turkish+Aviation+2005#p4332337

-Would IST-YYZ work out?

Since TK has Two 777F's on order, what will happen to the ULS A310's as they are now owned by Turkish Cargo. TK could start cargo flights from Ankara-Dubai or somewhere in the middle east and the A310 would be the right type of aircraft IMO

There was an article on Skylife magazine of TK.
Since August 20th, Citibank credit card users in 16 countries can transfer their thank you points to TK Miles and Smiles as miles. So far, Citibank credit card users from Australia, Bahrain, China, Indonesia, HongKong, India, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, UAE, USA and Vietnam transferred over 8 million miles in two months.
Seem like a lot of points, but in fact that is enough miles for only 89 JFK-IST Business Class tickets.
Other airline partners for the card is Cathay Pacific, Avianca, Etihad, Eva, AF/KLM, Garuda, Malaysia, Jet Airways, Qantas, Qatar, Singapore, Thai and Virgin Atlantic. All these airlines match 1000 points with 1000 miles. JetBlue is the only airline to give 500 miles for 1000 Citipoints.

The Canadian and Turkish CAA officials will meet in Canada in two weeks time and the bilateral will be amended to give 3 new slots to Turkish Airlines to serve Western Canada (YVR) so if Turkish will accept this proposal this will go forward and TK can launch IST YVR IST thrice weekly from April 1st, 2018;

I have a question regarding Miles & Smiles gold status and was wondering if anyone here might know: once you earn the miles to qualify for gold, is the status effective immediately, or does it start from the expiration date of your current status?

Like said, immediately.
I know, because when I switched to TK, I went from the basic membership to Elite Plus in less than a year and I was getting a new card every other month :)
I don't think you even need to wait for a new card, it is avail on the new TK app.

I'm sad to see all these airlines go from IST. AF Boeing 727 IST-CDG was my very first flight :(
I hope they or at least some of those missing airlines come back once the new airport is open.

Well, in essence, Air France is not leaving IST, they are simply utilizing a new product model. Same they are doing in markets like Berlin, Tel Aviv, etc.
Joon is still 100% AF.

D7 would actually benefit from working with PG, but their hub at klia2 is a total jungle. One of the worst terminals I have ever been in, so it's not the best transit point.

Europe is very popular with Malaysians, if Air Asia X codeshares with Pegasus on European routes, the flight can even go double daily. There's a lot of demand out of Malaysia.

While TK was trying to get a 5th star, Atlasglobal gets 4th star from Skytrax.
Not sure how accurate those ratings are from Skytrax, but congratulations to Atlasglobal :)

-So, I keep seeing the TK Morgan Freeman "Widen Your World" spot with subtitles over and over again on TV here in NYC. How effective these commercials where US citizens can't get a Turkish visa any longer, I wonder. For transit pax?
Bigger question, does TK run these ads in any other country? Anyone seen them? Baha??
-And great news on YVR. Thanks for the news.

Turkey is issuing visas to US citizens like normal again via the consulate/embassy. The only thing that remains suspended is the online e-visa and visa on arrival if arriving from the U.S,, but if arriving from a 3rd country, US citizens can get visa on arrival as well.

Regarding TK advertising, yes I often see them overseas, usually on channels like CNN International, BBC, CNBC, Bloomberg. Also have seen municipal bus wraps advertising in Bangkok, Singapore and Tokyo last few months, in addition to more typical billboard advertising.

I cannot comment about effectiveness of that ad in particular, but just to express a personal viewpoint, I have always found the Turkish Airlines ads that do not focus on celebrity endorsement (such as the Hayal Edince ad about the new Igdir Airport and the "Outstanding Airline Travelling the World" ad from 2007 with airplanes on the street) to be much more effective. But maybe this is just an avgeek perspective. Would be interested to know if others feel the same or differently.

According to airporthaber, TK asked DHMI to postpone its relocation to 3rd Airport, requesting to send non-hub airlines there first. According to this, both airports will be open for an unspecified period.

Lounge is very peaceful here tonight. Great to see the roadworks from Airport in finished and the metro at Taksim. They do things fast here !

Just enjoying my Turkish coffee and sweets :)

Turkish Airport Authority just released the numbers for November, looks great...ESB is still posting 18% growth for domestic and 34% growth international pax compared to last year (overall 20% combined pax growth in 2018 so far) and will pass 15 million pax this year, all time high. ESB is not primarily a tourist destination like AYT and BJV so the massive growth is a good sign because this is a year-round operation with premium and LCC traffic combined, well above any growth rate at another OECD capital. Good that THY finally is making a gradual expansion from ESB as AMS and DUS are the next destinations to be added to Berlin, Paris CDG, Frankfurt, Vienna, Moscow, Mecca and Jeddah. Still LHR, ZRH, BRU and DXB is not announced and is badly needed.

Better proportions.

At the introducing/Inauguration ceremony Turkish's CEO Ilker Ayci said, they will increase cargo destinations from 72 to 82.
Some planned dedtinations are Bogota, Mexico, Toronto, Houston, Zaragoza.

Ah, well, this is both a true & false interpretation. TK defends the fact that they cannot re-locate at the New Airport, overnight. They say, it will take them 2-4 weeks for re-location from AHL to the New Airport. That sounds a bit absurd: during this period how can they operate from two airports, simultaneously? Especially when you consider the domestic-international transfer??? (let alone, the "air safety issues" that are being claimed...)

They also don't want to be part of the unavoidable first days' hassles, when some airlines start to re-locate at the New Airport. They want to be the very lastcomer!...

From another angle, TK is pretty much right: they have much much more to do inside the terminal and also much on the airside than the other airlines. The Business Class Lounges, the in-terminal offices, ground handling services, some temporary facilities for at least the base checks and above all these the currently seen absence of a argo terminal (even a temporary one for the belly cargo....), all these elements counts.

On the other hand, there are some claims that the New Airport will be fully operational by end June 2019.

My gutfeel is that all airlines, except for TK & Star Alliance will re-locate by the end of March 2019 (beginning o summer timetable) and TK & Star Alliance members will follow on during the forthcoming months...

Why would they not be able to transfer airports 24-hours?

In recent years both the new HKG and BKK both opened overnight. As one airport closed, the next one opened a few hours later.

Obviously, there is lots of preplanning and relocation of equipment in the weeks prior, but the concept of closing one major global airport and opening another overnight is not impossible.

There is no reason why it cant be transferred through the night. TK could cancel a % of flights to make it smoother. If planned correctly this would not be an issue.

In July we had a vivid discussion about Turkish Aviation and its outlook for 2017.

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1367187

I had an estimation that IST will reach 5% growth
....
Kudos to Turkish Airlines and Atatürk Airport.
For the second half expect positive growth and an overall growth of about 5%...

Nice to see IST to reach that rate already in November 8-)
We might see 6% at years end if December growth is as healthy as November, 5.159.487 +16.5%

Results YTD for some Airports
IST 58.6 million +5%
SAW 28.8 million +5%
ESB 14.3 million +20%
ADB 11.8 million +6%
AYT 25.2 million +39%

Monthly statiscs will follow, need to find my excel files

Double digit growth in demand (revenue per kilometer) that commenced in July, kept on with 17.1% demand growth.

Wow. Turkish Airlines was quick this time to publish statistics

They carried 165.453 PAX on their N.American routes. Thats an increase of 14.6%.
Incredible how fast they managed to swap O&D with transfer pax.

Seems like the new 777Freighter is in operations, but strangely FR24 show “diverted” to DWC on the first flight. Anyways, will it be deployed to destinations where the leased 747 freighter are currently operating to?

IST having a nasty, windy night. METAR says 35Knots gusts up to 47knots from S/SW. Planes circling all over the place.
I still ask why would a plane from ESB, MLX, ERZ knowingly take off, ending up circling longer than the estimated flight time???

as per my understanding they will deploy at least twice per week to SoutAmerica combining current destination GRU with another airport in SouthAmerica going back to Europe.
