Fiji Airways restarting NRT with new A330.

Wed Dec 06, 2017 3:20 pm

Fiji Airways have announced that they will be commencing a thrice-weekly Nadi-Narita service from 3 July 2018. Its predecessor, Air Pacific, cancelled services to NRT back in 2009.

Whats more of a surprise is that FJ will be getting a new(?) A330-200 to cater for this new service. Bringing the A330 fleet to 5. Any ideas where the A332 is coming from?

Logical add. Good to see them broadening their network and growing too. It’s good for the aviation industry and customer choice when smaller airlines thrive. Hopefully someone else can advise where the A332 is coming from.

Pretty sure the 332 will be supplied by one of the leasing companies that still has outstanding orders.

In another leisure route move for NRT, HA will go double-daily to HNL from next August. So by then HA will have 11 a week from HND and 14 from NRT plus the 3 a week to KOA. No wonder NH want A380's for NRT - HNL !

Didn't Fiji Airways recently indicate they were looking for an A330 replacement? I guess that idea is on the back burner for the time being !

The A330 fleet is brand new, why would Fiji Airways already replace those aircraft?
What we leave behind is not as important as how we've lived.

so an A330 will be busy flying NAN/NRT/NAN 3 days a week, so that leaves 3-4 days a week when an A330 can be flying somewhere else ?

More flights to SFO perhaps &/or the occasional A330 to BNE, MEL, ADL, AKL instead of B737 ?

Or will FJ look to reintroduce YVR or put a widebody on HNL with good connections at NAN from BNE, SYD, MEL, ADL, AKL etc.

or will FJ reintroduce NAN/CBR or NAN/OOL?

Yes, very positive steps by FJ. Direct flights to NRT are also very economically viable as they translate into lower costs for Fijian exporters, especially the Fisheries department. Tuna exports to Japan are quite big.

More positive news coming out of Fiji today:
https://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/fiji-airways-breaks-ground-on-aviation-training-faci-444006/

New aviation training facility opening 2019 in NAN. Boeing 737 Max 8 and Airbus A330 simulators. If I am not mistaken, this will be the only Max 8 and A330(?) simulators in the pacific (Including Australia and NZ).

Every 6 months FJ currently sends its pilots for compulsory simulator training to BNE, HNL or SIN. This can soon all be done locally and at the same time also train other pilots from the region.

Nothing I can see in the orderbook or the production list to suggest they can get a new A330-200 in this timescale.

It doesn’t say in the linked articles that they are getting a new A330-200.

There is a real opportunity for FJ to offer an alternative to passengers from Wellington and Christchurch to connecting in Auckland for flights to Honolulu, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong. If they upped their frequency and offered good connections in NAN no reason why this couldn't work. The more options they offer long haul out of NAN the more opportunities for people to stop in one direction and they could provide some much needed competition to Asia and year round competition to North America. Could also attract inbound passengers to NZ.

Apparently Fiji Airways managing director Andre Viljoen has "confirmed" that FJ will be getting a new A330 aircraft - and as early as March!

Still not sure where it will be coming from. Most probably a lease if it is to be delivered by March.

Possibly use it on the Nan -Wlg route to replace the 737-700 which normally flies the route. Fiji's route ex Wlg twice weekly provides good connections to services ex Nan without the hassle of transiting through Akl

I’m still taking this as sloppy journalism. New for the airline but not ‘brand new’, unless there is an unannounced NTU.
