Best Way From JFK-SFO

Wed Feb 27, 2002 9:36 am

I am planning to visit one of my good friends this spring who lives in the Bay Area. What is the best way from JFK-SFO keeping in mind:
-on-time performance
-in-flight service
-in-fight entertainment
-newest equipment

Thanks for your time. I know there are numerous options on this popular route, so I'm sure there are many people out there who have flown from JFK-SFO many different ways.

You can fly JetBlue from New York-Kennedy into Oakland which is basically right across the bridge. From what I hear, they seem to match your above criteria very well.

I flew JFK-LAX on American a few months ago. I have to say I was more than impressed. They fed us so much I felt like I was at a buffet. We received personal DVD players with a pouch containing about 20 DVDs to watch at our leisure. The service was great, and we were ontime. We were on a 767-300 in First Class with the sleeper seats.
I won't lie to you. I have to say I was much more impressed with AA's Transcon service than I was with that of my own carrier. Of course the trip was several months ago, so things may have changed. But it WAS after September 11 that I flew on AA.
I don't know about Coach on a Transcon. Luckily I've never had to find out yet. Big grin

Also flew AA JFK-SFO on the 763. That leg was coach, but their Biz Elite, or whatever they call it these days was nice, as I got bumped up on a SFO-ORD leg.

JFK-SFO was great, smooth, the coach section was just fine, 763 was super, first time on it, and it was just great. It seemed like it couldn't wait to get up and go.

I would echo Nwairlines comment though, check out JetBlue into OAK, as I didn't pay for this flight, and didn't check fares, I bet they are pretty competative, and those PTVs would make the time go by even faster.

Cheers

United Airlines runs a combination of Boeing 767-200s and 767-300s on JFK-SFO/LAX several times a day.

If you were to select United Airlines and ride on the 767-300, this plane will feature all of our international amenties with the exception of the first suite. That product is not avalible on United's 767s. In the main cabin, all of the seats on the 763 are equiped with seat back personal televisions featuring several channels of video entertainment as well as the airshow map. In addition to choosing United, all UA planes feature channel 9 live air traffic control. If the cockpit crew makes it avalible, you can monitor your flight's progress.

Since United trimmed its schedule, our on time preformance has sky rocketed. In most cases the premium transcons push back on time and often arrive early. Sometimes there may be airport opperational delays or mechanicals but that does happen on any carrier.

United flys 767-200s on that route as well. The 762 is the dominant plane on that corridor. It features overhead video with the movie of the month as well as other video programming. The older seat design is on the 762 while the new seats with winged headrests are on the 763.

May I ask what cabin you will be traveling in to better answer your question about in flight service?

You should definitely look at OAK. jetBlue is flying 4 times a day into OAK, and AA is currently launching service next week with fares that match. It's no harder to get to downtown SF from OAK than it is from SFO (both offer a shuttle bus that takes you to the BART (light rail) stations, and I've heard more than one source tout that it's actually quicker to get to downtown from OAK.

As much as I'd like to love SFO, it's still a pain. I only use it for international flights to Asia.

You can get more details from:

ILUV767 -- Wouldn't the best way to monitor you planes progress to be to look out the window? Just kidding. United was my carrier of choice before the switch to a Houston base of operations. Now I am on Continental. United has a great product and superior comfort to any airline.

Thanks for all the feedback. I have traveled jetBlue many times from JFK to ROC, PBI and BTV and have always enjoyed the service. However, my friend lives closer to S.F. than Oakland. Sllevin writes that there are connections to mass transit from OAK. That would be great. However if the price of the ticket on UAL's 767-300 service (JFK-SFO) is around jetBlue's price of a ticket from JFK-OAK, I would rather take UAL. ILUV767, I will be flying coach class probably. What times does UA fly its 767-300's? Thanks again.

If availability exists, OAK is about $40 cheaper.

For 40 dollars on a round trip ticket, UA on a 767-300 looks to be the best choice on JFK-SFO. I just wonder how many frequiences exist between JFK-SFO with the 767-300.

How about Delta? How is the service on their 767-300's?

Delta's service is excellent from JFK-SFO. They use the international 767-300ER's with Business Elite seating. Best seat pitch available & the seats are better than AA's new business product. The wine selection is excellent, as are the personal video & stereo choices. The only problem is that there are only two directs a day.

Let's face it -- DL, AA or UA in business - you are bound to have a professional & relaxed flight. These three airlines each provide great trans-con service.

If you are going for economy class --- definitely go JetBlue into OAK. There is no better eceonomy service in the US!

From SFO-JFK:

Phil -- just as a further elucidation, SFO is about 25 miles from downtown San Francisco.

However, if your friend lives on the Penninsula (that is, north of San Jose but south of San Francisco on the west side of the bay) then SFO may be closer. You can also look at SJC which can connect to CalTrain (rail going north).

Don't forget Priceline or Hotwire- you can often get tickets for $200 or less.

I am coming from Long Island. Therefore, I am ruling out EWR because it is too far with the majority of options being out of JFK anyway. Thanks for all the feedback.

How about Southwest from OAK to ISP flying "backwards" in one of their lounge seats?

PHIL -- JFK-SJC on the 737-800 is a comfortable ride, the MRTC makes this flight tolerable, food is ok,service was great. the last time i flew it though, i took the 762 which was also nice.

SJC is a nice airport with out the delays SFO gets.

I've flown United between JFK and SFO (763) and IAD and SFO (772) recently in coach, and was very impressed (as much as one can be in coach). The food was edible, the service was good, and for those of you who care, their were several F/As of both genders who would be considered knockouts. Although the legroom was the standard knee-cracking 31", the contours of the seats allowed you to survive intact. The flights left on time, the entertainment was good. On both legs I got fares of about $ 400 R/T.
