Why Didn't DL Sticker Aircraft For These Olympics?

Thu Feb 28, 2002 6:56 am

They were the official airline for the Atlanta games. Remember, every aircraft was stickered. Why not this time? They were the official airline this time right?!

Other priority´s I guess.

To get exposure you have to sticker a considerable number of aircraft. Lots of ground time / planning / manpower etc .....

And then in a few weeks the same story to get off all the stickers..

Firing xx % of you workforce and then have an expensive sticker party can be un-political I guess

Because they would probably be required to wash the plane prior to applying the olympic decals. Something Delta isn't known for.

One idea of mine is that the economy was heading south in late 2000 so to save some money, they would not place the stickers on the aircraft and instead pamper the timetables, etc. with the Olympic logo.

To milemaster:
You can wash that plane all you want, It would still look the same. It needs a paint job. Right now we have three to four planes in paint hangers every day. It takes 5 to 10 days to paint a plane. The backlog of unpainted planes is another of Ron Allen's legacy.

I don't think DL was the official airline of the olympics...I think it was actually United.

FlyPNS1,

Delta was in fact the official airline of the 2002 Winter Olympic games in Salt Lake City. SLC is Delta's western hub and as such, Delta was the prefered carrier for transporting athletes and spectators to the games. Delta's sponsorship can be easily seen with its massive Olympic-themed pamphlets, etc as well as the 777, 757 and several CRJs painted with special SLCWOG livery.

I question why you would think that United was the official airline.

Along with the Olmpic themed 777,757, and RJ's, the SLC airport was also themed for the Olympics.

The employees did not receive special ties or scarves for the 2002 games as they did for the 1996 games.

Removal of the 1996 stickers was a gigantic pain in the a** after the completion of the Olympics. I think DL received adequate exposure for these games. In addition to the commercials on TV, the videos onboard the planes, printed items (schedule books, Sky magazine, etc..). Another surprise was that almost every interview with successful athletes took place in front of the DL Center with Delta Center prominent in the background.

United was the official carrier of the US OLYMPIC TEAM. Not the entire Olympic games.

I was looking at some pics of Delta's first 767, Spirit of Delta when it was new. Even when new that paint scheme looked dirty! It should go down in Delta history as the 'Dirrrty Delta' era.

The new colors are great, just can't get those planes painted fast enough.

DL got a decent amount of publicity although the DL television commercials certainly stink!

9 out of 10 CRJ's that flew into BIL were wearing that damned snowflake, torch-looking thing. (Still don't really know what the heck that thing is...) anyway, I would presume that a large majority of the CRJ's out of SLC were painted in Olympic schemes.

UA_727,

Actually, SkyWest, like ASA and I believe Comair, has only 1 CRJ painted in the Olympic livery.

Stand corrected, thank you ATL. Wasn't aware of that. Smile
