US Airways Cutting Transatlantic?!

Thu Feb 28, 2002 11:40 am

I was just looking through US Airways new timetables and according to the March 3 edition will cut ALL transatlantic flights down to one a WEEK from March 30. Is this temporary? and why are they doing this?

That is not a good sign...what will they do with their new A330s, as well as the 767-200s they fly over the pond as well?

It's probably just a temporary thing.

Things are looking bad for US Airways if they are cutting Transatlantic routes to weekly.

They are not cutting trans-Atlantic routes to weekly. What you see is an error. They did however...

End PHL-BRU, PIT-CDG, and CLT-CDG

Suspend PIT-LGW and CLT-FRA

Not true. OAG is still showing daily flights for PHL-LGW/CDG/FCO(back to daily actually)/MAD/MAN/FRA. It might just be a misread in the timetable.

Looking at the timetable the reason is simple now. The timetable ends March 31, and March 30 is a Saturday, March 31 is a Sunday. So those flights that become effective March 30 are only in that timetable for two days. Hence, you will only see 6(Sat) and/or 7(Sun) for the new flights. When the April timetable comes out, it will look like it's back to daily/6x weekly again.

I also think that what you saw might be a quirck, as that is about the time the time changes and some schedules are confusing around those periods. I ran across something similar recently when I was booking a SW flight near the end of their booking period. A few days later a new period opened up and the mystery was solved.

It is a combination of 2 things:

1) The timetable ends on the weekend in question.

2) A "time change" occurs during the overnight of Saturday 30 March/Sunday 31 March. Europe starts "summer time" which creates an additional hour of time difference. Unique schedules will exist for that evening. America makes the switch the following weekend.

I just discussed this morning with the US guys @ CDG about the future of US to CDG
the PIT flight comes back march the 18th,daily, and PHL remains as daily too
CLT isn't coming back, US was loosing to much money on the route
aside from that the PHL A333 was nearly empty this morning  Sad

Are they filling their 330s at the moment?
