Livery Unchanged Since The 707...

Sat Mar 02, 2002 5:35 am

It struck me that there are a few airlines out there that haven't changed their liveries since their use of stage 1 aircraft like the 707, DC-8, etc. A few examples below:

Thts true Lindy, Iknow american use to say the the Bare metal scheme saved them lots of money due to weight savings and on lower maintenance cost. The ol air France one is still in style as that is what alot of airlines are going to basic white with a name and a stripe here and their.

Singapore has done some minor modification on it's livery since the days of the 707. For example, the colours changed a bit and also there is an adition line on the tail now.

But after all, the design hasn't changed too much and it's still not looking old or outdated.

TAP also had their 707's with the latest livery, something that came in the far year of 1978!!!!

I'm so happy AA hasn't changed their paintjob! That's the best paint job in the industry!

I don't think the AF 707 counts- their 707's were repainted into the current livery, not delivered as such.
What year do you draw the line on livery updates?

AA's livery has been the same since the late 1960's. It looks old and dull, even on the new planes. In my opinion it draws no attention to itself, especially when the bare metal skin it dirty.

It is a shame to see such beautiful aircraft in a livery that looks like crap. The shiny new 777's are the only ones I can remotley tolerate. The MD-80 doesn't really bother me because it is a boring aircraft and I can care less how it looks.

Glad to see a lot of replies. I don't care which livery the aircraft was delivered in; it's just that most of the major airlines of the world disposed of the first generation of civil jet aircraft by the early 1980s. I just happen to think it's cool to see classic aircraft in liveries still used today.

Can anyone think of any current liveries used on DC-8s, BAC 1-11s or Caravelles? Thanks in advance.

I heard American saves about $380,000 a year (MD-80 fleet) in extra fuel due to not having the weight of paint.

Caravelle: I think the LTU Caravelles had the same livery as today the A320/A330/B757/B767 have. But there are no LTU Caravelle pics on the database.

Sushka are you joking or what, the current Air Malta livery looks completely different, and Air Orange has just designed a new livery for Air Malta which is going to be introduced in summer.

Am I right in thinking the "Gray" areas on the AA aircraft are composites/other non-metals?

Interesting to see how the newer aircraft AA uses are more gray and less silver. As aircraft become more and more almost completely composite (both boeing and airbus, it is ineveitable) do you think AA will think of something besides the gray? In my opinion an almost totally gray aircraft with just the stripes would like terrible.

Sushka I beg to differ re-the AirMalta livery. Although the logo remains the same, the famous Maltese eight pointed cross, the livery has gone through three stages, even though the first two are almost identical there is no comparison between the original and the present one.
There may soon be another revision of AirMalta colours too. Lila Design have been assigned this responsibility. AirOrange will keep us posted.

Here is a pictorial evolution.

I agree with Ndebele about the AirMalta livery. But I am very anxious to see what AirOrange will come up with.

And the current Air Malta livery is only ~12 or 13 years old. Strange to see such a small airline change their livery again. It looks still really great!

Bouraq hasn't changed either...
They tried the all white body livery and reverted to the old one before the whole fleet was repainted.

It's only been slightly modified since the 720B days, but it's the same livery nonetheless!

Africa is a bit of a haven for airlines that flew classic jets like the B707/DC-8 in their current livery. including;

Air Seychelles
Air Zimbabwe
Royal Air Maroc

EL AL had a unique livery for almost 3 decades. It was introduced in March 1971 on a Boeing 707. The 747 joined the fleet some months later, in the same colors. 737s, 767s, 757s and 744s all received the same livery, with some slight changes in 1994.

A lot of the first generation jets you show in this posting were updated in the liveries shown years after they were purchased. Those were not the original liveries. For example, the livery shown on the AA 707s was not the original one, neither is the Air France livery. Many airlines updated their liveries upon buying their stage II wide bodied airliners. Their fleets at the time still consisted of 707s, DC-8s, etc, and thus those aircraft were repainted too, although disposed of soon thereafter.

Frankly, I love the bare metal AA look. The new 777s and 737NGs look beautiful. It is expected that older planes will - well, look older. Planes, like the people they fly, are not youthful forever.
