United 747 on the move

Tue Feb 13, 2018 3:43 pm

N105UA as UAL2587 currently enroute Victorville-Laurinburg Maxton, NC. Anyone know if any other ones will do the same?

A scrapper location, Charlotte Aircraft Corp located there. From Wikipedia: "Laurinburg-Maxton Airport (34°47′31″N 079°21′57″W): The company has a sizable operation at Laurinburg-Maxtion Airport where it flies in aircraft and reduces them to parts. Aircraft such as 747s, 737s, 727s, DC-10 and DC-9s are visible from perimeter roads in various stages of stripping of usable parts."

Maybe TUP couldn't handle more, or CAC-MEB offered a better price to do the deed.

All the better reason to get one of these wonderful birds to a museum before they all fly away to the scrapper...

Looking at Google maps, you can see numerous old NW DC-10s, 727, etc. There is a WN 733 there too. :-( Sad but it is a business!

Maxton hasn't received any 747's in years. They still have 2 NW 747-100's . I wonder how long it will take them to scrap it?

Woah, Maxton? I didn't know they were taking anything new these days. I was there earlier this decade, and what was there had arrived long ago. I guess they're back in business.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but N105UA was originally ordered by NW, but not taken up. MEB is well populated by ex-NW aircraft.

Granted I'm a sentimentalist for quads, but if I were a 747 pilot, I don't believe I'd be able to bring myself to accept that ferry contract.

It's like taking Old Yeller out back to put him down....

N105UA was one of two 747-451s that Northwest Airlines did not take delivery of. The other one N106UA was sold a long time ago. This one is in storage somewhere in Saudi Arabia. Most likely the first to go to the scrappers as it is a non stand UAL Aircraft. Others may follow. Neither UAL or Delta have any use for their 747 aircraft . N105UAs N Number expires on September 30, 1918. :old:

Avocet scrapped two 747-400s at SFB so far from international operators, perhaps some more may end up here?

This might be the first scrap sent to Maxton since NWA in 2003?

And Maxton is in the middle of nowhere . It's at least an hour to CLT or FAY.

Yes,the runway is too short to leave.

The runway is 4200 feet long and 75 feet wide. It is a general aircraft airport owned by the city of Manila, Arkansa.
