Saudia Cargo 747 got its tail fin removed

Fri Feb 23, 2018 9:05 pm

So what's happened to TC-ACR, a 15 years old 747-400F?

The aircraft is still on the ground in Maastricht as of Feb 2nd 2018, a tent has been built around the aircraft to conduct the needed aircraft repairs, which suggests that other than initial information of no damage suggested, the aircraft sustained substantial damage (editorial note: which is why we changed the occurrence rating to Accident on Feb 2nd 2018).

Besides the repairs that could be needed in that area too, could it be related to the strong winds from Russia that are expected next week in part of Europe?

Winds. As other posters have said there is some bad weather headed that way.

As the undercarriage is where the most damage happened then it'll need jacking. That's preferably done in a hangar, so if they need it doing there then that big sail would need removing first . If it was to fall off its jacks then even more expensive damage would happen.

To reduce the influence of the wind onto the fuselage while being repaired?

Why would they remove the tail fin? Because the aircraft maintenance manual told them to do so given the environmental conditions expected. Next thread.

I can assure you, the AMM says no such thing. I suspect the repairs being performed are generally outside the scope of the AMM and SRM.

Any work being done is being done under the direction of Boeing's engineering group. It may even be a Boeing RAMS Team that's performing the major repair.

Disclaimer: I know absolutely nothing about the damage to this aircraft.

AC is being repaired by SOAR

Aircraft is getting a new nose section. Due to some balance issues, the nose has been temporarily removed.
Also due to the strong winds expected this weekend at EHBK

How much/how big is the section involved? Just the nose cargo door, or are we talking even more?

I'm facinated that a 15 year old 747F justifies getting a new nose. This implies the freight rebound is expected to continue.

The only reason why this was not a writeoff is because otherwise, ACT would have had 2 hull losses within 12 months.
They are actually almost bankrupt anyhow.

Don’t know exactly, but since there was visible damage above the nose gear I think it will be more than the nose cargo door.
